Chip's been kidnapped - How not to copy an affiliate website by Matthew Wood

Posted in Affiliate Marketing, Affiliate University on 24/05/2007 at 1:45pm

We had a chuckle in the office yesterday, it appears that ‘Chip’ a character designed by the team here at existem has been virtually kidnapped and is appearing on a new competing loyalty website.

We were informed by a loyal member who asked if this was a sister site of ours? – we naturally took a look - can you see spot Chip our red and yellow robot character?

Our site..

 The offending site...

On a serious note what should affiliates do if they spot this kind of blatant copyright breach?

This is the fourth time this has happened on each occasion the offender usually states there is no similarity (even though our custom designed icons and graphics appear) or it was a designer in India and it was 'out of their hands' hmm easy cop-out.

My advice would be to not waste your time with friendly warning emails - contact the affiliate networks directly - hopefully you have a closer relationship (or speak to me and I'll help you out)  The networks should be able to contact the affiliate on your behalf.

If you are able to stem or stop their revenue stream that has to be more effective and less stressful than legal action in the long term.
