In response to your very good article which I agree with totally. Webgain offer a tiered system with some merchants where you can accept a lower commission rate in return for an exclusive discount. If the code is used you get a lower amount, however if the user forgets or is not bothered you get the full commission. Its a very good idea and I feel works very well for both parties. It would be even better if they could attach the commission to the discount code rather than relying on network cookies - something like a 'refered by' box on many downline clubs. Then if your code was taken, you would still get the commission. Not sure that would be viable for merchant though :)
