Discount codes and their misuse have again reared their ugly head in the world of affiliate marketing. Joe has recently blogged about codes and suggests that merchant’s “manage promotional codes intelligently” so that we are all winners! In response to your very good article which I agree with totally. Webgain offer a tiered system with some merchants where you can accept a lower commission rate in return for an exclusive discount. If the code is used you get a lower amount, however if the user forgets or is not bothered you get the full commission. Its a very good idea and I feel works very well for both parties. It would be even better if they could attach the commission to the discount code rather than relying on network cookies - something like a 'refered by' box on many downline clubs. Then if your code was taken, you would still get the commission. Not sure that would be viable for merchant though :)
