£655 Million Boom In Ring Tones
Britons downloaded a staggering £655 million worth of songs, ring tones and games last year. The entertainment craze has exploded thanks to the rapid march of technology, according to research published yesterday. Music fans can now get hold of the latest songs or games on their computer or mobile phone at the click of a button.
Around half of those questioned in a survey classed themselves as regular downloaders. The most popular area is musical ringtones for mobile phones, the survey by churchill home insurance found. Almost four in ten people had bought at least one ringtone, which can cost as much as £3.00 each.
Churchill calculates that Britons downloaded £317 million worth of tunes last year. Song downloads have have also enjoyed phenomenal success thanks to the arrival of such websites as napster. Fans can instantly get a hold of the latet singles for less than 80p. According to the research, we bought more than £60 million worth of music downloads last year.
The success of both ringtones and track downloads has resulted in the industry producing weekly charts for each. Churchill's research based on a survey of 1000 people, revealed that Britons spent £105 million on screensavers for computers or mile phones last year, around £83 million on games and £16 million on movie clips. The growth of broadband technology, which allows faster connection to the internet, has helped to drive the boom.
