Syntryx is the only main spider tool that I know of - speak to a guy called James there and tell him I said hi.

I would think that if your already a merchant on a network, you have access to alot of information on your competitors affiliates already or at least you may have if you ask your affiliates what sites they advertise you on and they tell 'all'.
I don't know and have never used Syntryx, but its stats say that they have over 2 million sites they spider for information about affiliates. I imagine that to find those 2 million affiliate sites they must have searched millions more, making a crawler to spider that many sites would i imagine be a nightmare. Although it would be an interesting project and gain a great deal of interest from other 'competitors' program managers. (maybe a worthwhile tool to sell?)
I reckon the easiest way would be to piggyback major search engine indexes crawling them for results on they have found on your competitors brand and then dragging those results pages for affiliate links. The only problem with this maybe a google i/p ban (until you refresh your i/p from our dynamic allocating Uk isps). I wouldn't recommend hammering google too much from the same server i/p - it ends in tears.
If anyone else has any recommendation, fire away, as it would also be a great tool for affiliates as well to find out who the competition is.

I had a look at Syntrix and it was OK, but a bit lacking in UK data for smaller niches.
Unfortunately you can't use the same backlink tools as for SEO as they don't pick up people linking via aff links.
Best alternative to the expensive tools I've found is to just stick the competitor name into Google and sit someone with a long attention span in front of the computer.
If you find anything, do shout.
Whats it worth to networks/agents/merchants?
We already have something similar but may need a bit of tweaking

Check out Stop Trademark Poaching | BrandVerity, they have a 14 day trial. You are limited to 150 keywords and 5 domains. You will get affiliate ID's for a dozen networks (US). They are PPC bidders.
Here is a backlink analyzer: Yahoo Backlink Information

Where is the hitwise tool?
We ahve hitwise and can't see it
Doug
Hi Doug
Unfortunately I don't have it anymore so can't give exact way to get there. But there were two ways as far as I can recall. One was to see referring traffic for other sites, you could grab some affiliates from that, the other was a find affiliates report. It may be there are different versions of hitwise, depending on the business using it? I'd ask them about it. I'll be honest, it was not hugely effective but it was there.
Cheers

Doug,
When you have logged into Hitwise, and you have paid for access to the affiliate marketing module, you will have a link on the left hand navigation - ''Affiliate Marketing'
You will than have three options (cut and pasted from Hitwise)
1. Research Potential Affiliates
Opportunities for www.xxx.com - websites that www.yyy.co.uk gets visitors from that B&Q Online: From Kitchens & Bathrooms to Sheds & Paving; plus planning tools does not.
Competitive overlap - websites that send visitors to both www.xxx.com and www.yyy.co.uk.
Strengths for B&Q Online: From Kitchens & Bathrooms to Sheds & Paving; plus planning tools - websites that www.xxx.com gets visitors from that www.yyy.co.uk does not.
Which websites send more traffic to sites in the Shopping and Classifieds - House and Garden industry than to www.xxx.com?
2. Evaluate and Expand
Does www.xxx.com drive its users to other sites in the Shopping and Classifieds - House and Garden industry?
Where does www.xxx.com rank in its industry and does it have stable traffic?
Where does www.xxx.com get its traffic from?
What search terms send visitors to www.xxx.com?
3. Report on Current Affiliates
What proportion of visitors to www.xxx.com have come from www.yyy.co.uk?
Is www.yyy.co.uk sending users to other websites in the Shopping and Classifieds - House and Garden industry?
Hope this helps
