Somebody I know went through a six month legal battle with one of the sponsors (whose name begins with 'deal' and ends in 'time'). They tried to deprive him, and scores of other 'partners', of their affiliate commission. They didn't have a leg to stand on and were eventually forced to pay up. You can avoid replying to people's phone calls, you can claim you didn't get a single one of their 50 emails over a period of six months and you can even not respond to the court's papers, but you can't avoid the long arms of the law forever.
After the way this company has treated affiliates in the UK and were subsequently humiliated (see documents in Small Claims Court, London Central), they daren't set up an affiliate program ever again.
Not surprised they're sponsoring this event though. People who don Gucci suits and have offices in Conduit Street are invariably forgiven for their past crimes, no matter how much angst and how many sleepless nights they cause others. That's cos they've got $$$s.
As the guru of the British establishment Machiavelli wrote: "princes who have achieved great things have been those... who have known how to trick men with their cunning, and who, in the end, have overcome those abiding by honest principles".
