woo hoo!
Last year was a real scream - literally! cant wait for this year!
Ladies and Gents, it is that time of year again… buy.at 5 aside football tournament!
This year we will be jointly hosting it with AOL advertising on Friday 25th September. The tournament will be held at The David Beckham Academy (no need to worry about rain ruining your hair) see: David Beckham Academy . It will be played in the usual format – 4 groups of 5 teams with the top two teams of each group progressing to the knockout stage to find the winning team.
As this is a joint event this year we are limited to the number of teams we can enter this year. We have space for 7 teams to enter which is open to all affiliates merchants and agencies. Teams should be a maximum of 7 players including 2 subs. Teams must be made up of people within the industry, so no signing up your mate who once had a trial for Stevenage!
To enter please send the name of your team and all team members names, company and email address to Lizzie.Randall@corp.aol.com or 0207 299 8379 by Friday 11th September 2009. This will be on a first come first served basis and I will send out a formal invite to confirmed teams with details of the day.
Any questions or problems just give me a shout!
Thanks
Lizzie

Looking forward to seeing everyone again!
There has been a quiet whisper throughout Newcastle this week, like a thin fog on the Tyne, that some footballing silverware might finally be making its way up to the North East.
Newcastle has long been starved of its football glory and the city is amidst a modern sporting revolution. Whether this revolution is capable of bringing the club out of the dour, outdated black and white and into technicolour remains to be seen, but there is one team striving for success on Tyneside – buy.at.
buy.at, like Newcastle, has been through its own revolution over the past two years. They were convincingly beaten in the final at Wembley in 2007 as buy.at, dumped out in the knock out stages in 2008 as Platform-a, and they now stand collectively on the same platform (a) waving in the approaching AOL Advertising train.
So what will they be capable of achieving this year? Is it a step forward for the club or a step back?
Nicholas Caulfield, the manager, was under considerable pressure last season to deliver a trophy and his neck was primed for the managerial guillotine after their early exit, but the calls for “Shearer” have been muffled by Caulfield’s excellent campaign with Liverpool on Football Manager 2009. He has shown an innate ability to handle an extremely tight budget, has consistently delivered results with a small youthful squad, has thrived under massive internal and external pressure and is not afraid to “tinker” in high profile matches.
A resurgent manager has kept the buy.at board at bay for now but this campaign could be his last if he can’t produce a scintillating display at the David Beckham Academy in September.
So what of Caulfield’s team this year?
buy.at are obviously still without the mercurial talents of Chris Brown, whose infamous red card in the 2007 final signalled the end of his buy.at career. They have also lost Richard “The Cat” Forster in goal, whose reflexes and agility resembled those of a cat who has seen eight lives pass him by, and doesn’t want to risk diving or leaping around anymore for fear number nine is just around the corner.
Caulfield’s scouting team has therefore been hard at work over the past ten months and has managed to trawl the company and uncover a couple of diamonds hiding in the rough. Who would have thought to look in the depths of the Technology department for sporting types? Finding an agile techie is like uncovering oil, it’s a dirty job, you have to dig around a lot, it requires a lot of man power and when you eventually hit a rich well the rewards are enormous.
In addition Caulfield has been given the freedom to pick his team this year, which could be the difference. He may look to the enthusiastic Paul Blacklock (who has not spoke to him in a year since his exodus in 2008) and line up with three Accountants, who would certainly make up the numbers, or he could include the sulky Peter Armstrong, whose still has a question mark over his fitness and his temperament, which is receding like his hairline.
buy.at will still line up with a strong spine this year with plenty of players experienced in tournament play but Caulfield might be tempted to tink with his captain as well.
He has plenty of characters in his squad that are capable but needs a player who can instil calm and encouragement in key situations. Caulfield may keep his armband around his Scottish terrier Pete Cheyne or may pass it back to the stalwart Paul Newton who lead the team to the final in 2007. This could be one of Caulfield’s biggest decisions yet and one that might not be announced until the press conference before the first game.
The bar has certainly been raised in buy.at towers and the gauntlet has been slapped across this forum and thrown firmly to the ground.
To quote a West Ham supporter from Tuesday’s match against Millwall. “Come over here (to the David Beckham Academy) if you think you are hard enough!”
Caulfield and his team will line up at the David Beckham Academy on 24th September 2009. To sign up please e-mail Lizzie.Randell@corp.aol.com
Thanks for the update Nick.
Mockers has left a chasm in your line-up too...surely Macho has earned a recall?
Shame I won't be there to show you boys up again![]()

Macho, aka Paul Blacklock, has recently suffered an injury but we are assessing his fitness over the coming weeks.
If he can prove to the buy.at Medical Staff that he has recovered, then Macho has a good chance of being on the plane to London.
As for the claims that Mockford has left a “chasm” in the buy.at line-up, I am confident we have the strength in depth to cope with his loss. Besides we have plenty of uncoordinated rugby players in the company who could step in at any point.
Ladies and Gents, the teams have now been filled - game on.
