I don't do Casinos, but I have stayed at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky which is just opposite the palace on Dam Square. That's a *very* nice and somewhat expensive hotel. It's definitely worth staying in at least once

Check out the Bijenkorf department store which is nearby. There are also some great bars and restaurants in the area. My favourite is In De Waag (indewaag.nl) over in Nieuwmarkt which is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel through the red light district.
