Personally i use a combination of plugins and template tweaks.

First stop without adding any plugins is to modify your permalinks.

To activate this ensure you add the code to your htaccess file.

As for plugins, we use the ALLINONESEO it is free and fab.

Some site sculpting also helps SEO. Basic fact is that there are so many plugins that if you use a combo of 5-10 additional plugins then you probably have a fairly unique set up for SEO anyway!
