Here are my top 5 reasons why people fail at affiliate marketing, what are yours?
1) They don't focus on a niche.
2) They choose a subject they are interested in, but pay no attention to whether it works well online or whether there is demand for the service or product online.
3) They get carried away with the coding, adding too many bells and whistles, and forget about attracting traffic to the site.
4) They don't have any informative original content, so their site has no added value and is no different from what is already "out there".
5) They give up too easily, and don't try enough different approaches, and don't give sites enough time to succeed.

Very true. I think you covered all the major points, just little bits left over:
- They are shy to ask for help (even if there's plenty of it)
- The don't follow instructions and guides that are proven to work
- They don't do what they are told to do (e.g. don't implement changes suggested by product managers, etc)
- They are eager to learn but not to implement (not taking action)
and probably many more.

(1) They forget its a business first and a geek, cool, techie thing second which leads to...
(2) They don't do all the normal things you would do when starting a business, because the net makes it too easy to 'suck it and see', eventually leaving them with a nasty mixture of too many tastes and a dodgy tummy.
They write a site about doing well with adsense/affiliate sites even though this is their first website attempt.
They create a shopping/comparison website.
They talk lots and do no work....

I think thats a cliche that applies to corporate people starting their own businesses.
But affiliates are already doing it to some extent. People are right to be wary of risk when you look at the stats for success/failure. imo more important to try to figure out whether one has the right set of skills to do it before taking big risks.
The thing is, you hear all about the people who have 'made the best move I ever did and never looked back', while you don't hear about the ones that lost more or less everything. Anyway, its a bit odd really talking about failure, as if its terminal. I imagine for the majority it just doesn't earn as much as they thought it would.
Perhaps the real failure is when someone spends thousands and loads of time taking a big risk setting something up which hasn't really been researched properly.
Then they don't get another chance, cos they're knackered.
the real failure is give up..don't give up ,succeed doesn't come easyly..
Try to think outside the box. Being creative is always difficult and you're unlikely to come up with a totally new website concept (don't give up trying though) but if do come up with a different approach push it quickly and quietly before everyone else spots what you're up to. Don't give up.

They dont understand the pros and cons of affiliate marleting
3, 4 & a little of 5 apply to me!
i must take note of this!
They thought it would be easier than what it actually is
They dont have enought capital to follow it through and really stick to it
They dont really undestand SEO
:blush
"you're unlikely to come up with a totally new website concept (don't give up trying though)"
Yes, that is very true. The best sites tend to be ones which are small steps away from something that's already existing elsewhere, not giant leaps for web kind. Take a look at Face book - the idea of getting together a year book of university leavers was already common place in the US, and we had Friends Re-united here. Facebook.com evolved from there.
But yeah, I think I'll go back to Doug's point:
Reason 1 - they spend too much time reading forum threads about failure, instead of working out what their goals are for success, and then devoting their undivided attention to getting there, step by step, day by day.
Speaking of which - good night![]()
Dont take enough time to research things and write a decent website with quality links.
