I'd suggest that these guys are fairly good : seo consultant - Google Search.
Also might consider these guys : seo consultant - Google Search if you're looking internationally.

Obvious answers aside though, I've personally worked with Search Engine Optimisation, SEO, Search Engine Marketing, UK & wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
Also Dave Naylor a UK SEO and Search Marketing is very well respected.

I believe Larry Page & Sergey Brin are considered 'guru' status with regards to knowledge on search engines.... :tup

Modesty forbids it

You know what, I'd actually disagree. I don't rate search engine employees as being good at SEO, almost by definition. they see different things to us, and have an utterly different perspective. It was very instructive reading Matts early stuff when he first started his blog, and got a taste of the other side of the coin. He learned quite a lot

You could try typing 'SEO' into Google and see who appears at the top

Ack, no! SEO related terms are a crap guide to SEO performance, as they get so badly mauled on a regular basis. A lot of good SEOs never appear in those rankings for various reasons, and quite poor SEOs have historically appeared in those rankings

I say from our experience that Dixon @ Receptional know's his stuff. He's often out and about at conferences and the like giving presentations on white hat SEO methods.

I'd recommend David Viney's book - Get to the Top on Google: Tips and Techniques to…Amazon.co.uk: David Viney: Books

(not an aff link, don't worry)

There's a website - SEO Expert Services | Website Promotion - Home - with a code in the book for a few months free trial, though I haven't had a look at it yet....
