I have one that's had google visit but won't index.
I submitted my first site to Yahoo and Google about a couple of weeks ago and it's still not indexed. How long does it usually take for a site to get indexed?
How do you know Google has visited your site?
I just typed in ' site:[my site] ' into google and only 1 page out of 80 was listed in the results. Anyone know why this is?
Hia mate,
Google can take as little as 30 minutes to index a page. What you need to do it get inbound links pointing at your main domain. Google works by crawling a webpage and then following the links from that page to somewhere new so it stands to reason that the more links pointing to you the quicker Google and other engines will pop by.
As for how to tell when Google has visited, in your website logs you should find something like this:
For Google:
Http Code: 200 Date: Apr 05 03:00:20 Http Version: HTTP/1.1 Size in Bytes: 259
Referer: -
Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +Verifying Googlebot - Webmasters/Site owners Help)
For Yahoo:
Http Code: 200 Date: Apr 05 05:51:02 Http Version: HTTP/1.0 Size in Bytes: 259
Referer: -
Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Google; Yahoo!'s Web Crawler)
For Live:
Http Code: 200 Date: Apr 05 03:00:20 Http Version: HTTP/1.1 Size in Bytes: 259
Referer: -
Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Msnbot; +Live Search)
You should think about getting your on page seo sorted before getting links in though. And dont change your content a fat lot in the first few months other than to keep adding additional pages. Just keep your keyword density within 1-4% and use your H1, H2, H3, P LI Tag to their best. Dont forget to comply with W3C too. It does help a small bit.
Also, iv a theory that adding: about us, contact us, accessibility, privacy, diversity & equality, careers pages helps your site appear more like a corporate/local authority site. Iv always been in the habit of writing at length about disability issues and any helpful info i can give about my subject. Another benefit of this is that people start to view your site as a quality, helpful product and you start to obtain links from local councils, charities and non profit websites. Its a real snowball effect when it starts to happen and you'll start to see it in your stats.
Just have patience, everything will be found. Just make sure your navigation is spot on and keep your xml & html sitemaps easily found on your site (cant hurt to link to it from every page on your site. Also chuck the following line into your robots.txt
sitemap: http://www.mydomain.com/sitemap.xml

Dale,
Thanks findlite, mogga.
I've read numerous articles on on/off page seo and followed every advice that has been offered regarding this and yet still that one page that has been indexed does not appear anywhere near the top of the results on Google. I think Google has a personal vendetta against me.
I find my Wordpress sites get indexed very quickly, even with no aparent inbound links.
Standard HTML pages are another matter!
You can usually get your homepage in Google within 48 hours, it can take a few months for Google to index all your pages.

I dont have a site but i am maintaining two blogs where Google takes about 2-3 days to index my articles and homepage. I dont understand one thing, that is, though i blogs have good PR why does Google take so much time to index pages. ALso i like to know some points that are:
1. Is daily updating blogs is not a good practice? As human element misses when they get updated daily (this i read in an article)
2. IF the page rank goes down is that means you have severe problems with the site?
Thanks in anticipation to all members reading and suggesting your thoughts on the smae.

One of my recent sites took less than 8hrs to get indexed
Add a forum signature link to your site and/or place a listing with GumTree or similar.
All your pages will get indexed in the end. I usually find on a large site it isnt the index page which gets indexed first.
Ive had sites linked to from gumtree which get indexed before ive been to tesco lol others take a few weeks, just how it goesIt will get indexed...

Of my website, only 6 pages have been indexed out of about 80ish and when keywords are typed in for those pages, they don't appear to show on the results page of Google, despite implementing seo techniques. Could someone have a quick look at the pages that are indexed and offer a diagnosis as to why they don't appear to index when keywords are typed in. The site is UnionStreet.info. Thanks
The easiset way to see if you're pages are being returned in Goog search results is to open an analytics account, then setup pagination. This will show you exactly which page of Googs results you appear on when a search phrase matching your content/pages is found i.e someone types 'duck sandwhich' into Google, analytics shows that your site was returned in the results and the exact page it was displayed on Google. This saves trawling through the results page trying to find your site.
Are you running a CMS/Blog for this site? I've seen issues with custom themes where they noindex/nofollow pages/posts if the site is not in the root directory of the hosting site.
How old is your site? You need to get out of the, theoretical, sandbox...but that's a whole other story :cry
