I've spotted a one-word domain name available for a popular household item which gets a decent exact match search tally each month.
The co.uk and org.uk options have already gone but they are currently just showing the standard registrar holding pages.
Still available are the net, org, biz and me.uk domains.
I'm UK-based and the site would be for a UK market only, so would the me.uk domain be the best buy, or would one of the others be better.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

.me.uk don't appear to be that popular with the UK web marketing / domaining community. Resale values are currently low, principally because they are only supposed to be used by individuals, which hinders them being sold to businesses. However, if you aren't ever going to sell the domain, that's not a problem. I am trying them out myself, e.g. my cheap mobile phones site. According to the Google Toolbar this has a PR of 2, but I haven't really tried ranking it yet. .me.uk does of course have the advantage that it can be recognised as a UK domain and this may give a boost on Google.co.uk.

My take would be try a .me.uk out as an experiment and see how you do. In theory you should be able to rank it just as well as a .net.

It depends how you are going to market the site, but .org.uk is strong for UK targetted SEO.

Thanks to all for the feedback. Most of my sites are org.uk as the co.uk had usually already gone. I find the org.uk option generally fares well as far as ranking goes with Google etc and something like Smingle's monster post confirms that they can do very well...but I didn't know whether or not me.uk was viewed as a considerably 'weaker' alternative - and therefore when the co.uk and org.uk domains are not available, it would be better to go for the longer established com, net, info, org, biz options, even if they are not UK-specific.
I also have various UK-targeted .com and .biz sites which are doing OK as far as ranking goes, but they don't seem to do as well ranking-wise as my .org.uk domains, hence my attempt to gauge just how strong the .me.uk alternative is.
    Thanks again

If you're interested in keyword optimisation then it doesn't really matter - if you are interested in brandability it does.

In order of brandability I would suggest .net, .biz, .org, .me.uk unless the .me.uk is really good (like show.me.uk).
