Re: Please stop begging!
It's a personal opinion. Besides I'd hardly call that begging. If it's so tiresome maybe you should remove the "vote for us" button on the Aff Window blog? Just saying
You won't find a single 'vote for us' comment from me (apart from there obviously).Kevin Edwards, Strategy Director

fair enough... I don't see anything wrong in a one off "thanks - i'm pleased to be nominated.. ta for that if you want to vote cool if not i'm well chuffed because i know i won't win etc type post"... some of us can't save the old "thanks" for the winners announcement - this is our "fa cup" so i'm going to enjoy itit just kind of feels wrong to blog and ask people to vote for me
I also like the "who i voted for" blogs.. helps keep the christmas card list short! LOL!
Anyway there's only a few days left for voting, so hopefully we'll see a bit of decorum in the old "vote for me-ing" - and that the community is influenced to vote from activity over the whole year and not the last week - so that those that deserve to win do so.

Jason,
I think most people are able to differentiate between a harmless plug and shameless self publicity.
I like your blog so much I even took time out to reply not once but twice to your post on banners today...Kevin Edwards, Strategy Director

Using network newsletter systems?! That is really not on! When using those, you're talking about your client and your client only!

Interesting thread and a subject that I have had numerous discussions about recently.
Ok, with my personal hat on I find it all a little tiresome at times because although many of the people / companies nominated for awards this year are more than deserved there are plenty more people that I work with and know well that contribute considerably to the industry and are not nominated. I often think it is a case of how loud you shout rather than what you do and many people are not given the recognition they deserve. But that shouldn't take anything away from those nominated this year as their hard work is justifiably being recognised.
With my network hat on. dgm are up for network of the year, ok granted, so are most of the other networks but it's still a first in the 3 years that the awards have been running. It is very much a case that if we don't shout about it no-one will know and I agree with Kieron's point that its actually more about getting as many people to vote as possible, not necessarily for us. I know a number of people that have voted this year that would never normally vote and get involved so that must be a good thing. However, I would like to think we don't push it down people's throats and we are honest in the way we go about it.
I think it is ok to promote that you have been nominated but agree it should be done professionally. I also think it is important to get as many people voting as possible as ultimately that gives each award more credibility.
Thanks
Helen
Note: As I write this I have noticed a dgm banner "vote for us"! But nobody responds to banner advertising, right?

To be honest, I don't have a problem with people asking for votes (or even paying for them on sites such as NMA.... even if it is a waste of money!) - you have to remember that not everyone uses the A4U so may not have voted previously and certainly may not know that the people shortlisted are up for an award.
That being said, I don't think many people will change their mind between their first and second vote - the winners of each catagory are pretty much a dead cert but well done to everyone that's shortlisted - it's been a hell of a year after all
Now let's all stop moaning and look forward to the event itself - good luck to everyone who is up for an award.James Little | Head of Affiliate Development | AffiliateFuture

Come on Kieron...... It so is kissing ass or at the very least, patting each others tushy while winking

I don't see any harm with posting after the event - just don't agree with it before the event. Also I've no problems with buttons etc, but last week for example, I received an email from a merchant/agency ASKING for my vote. This was the only communication I've had from them in 50 weeks!
Go figure on the timing...!
Now... just so people know, I voted for Hotel Chocolat (mmmm yummy), BuyAgift (yeeee haaaaa), La Senza (whoaaa yeah) and Virgin Holidays (ZZZzzzz)... think that should box me off nicely for some "thank you" style gifts throughout the year :tup
That's correct... I never even noticed it

And that in its own way is the problem Frostie.
You yourself have just outlined your criteria for voting - that you might get freebies etc off the back of it.
Let me tell you about my day as an Affiliate Manager.
I get up at 5.30. I get into my office at 8.15 and then proceed to work with a vigour to sort out all 5000 of my affiliates problems. Some are valid and some are prurient, but they all need to be looked after. Some of my affiliates will deliver lots of players, and some none - but who am I to decide who is worthy or not. Each of my 5000 affiliates deserve the same amount of time as they have built a site that they have decided needs my companies banners. Todays newbie is tomorrows Keiron or Duncan blah blah.
Now I try to get back to all my affs queries asap. However, not only is it not always possible, but sometimes I have to escalate that problem and rely on a timely answer.
If that doesnt happen, or if I dont get back to people in time, or if there is anything else that they arent happy with then a post goes up, or a blogpost goes out expressing their 'disgust' or 'dismay' or amatuerism' or 'some such other shizzle' about how ****e *I* am.
Not the company, not my colleagues, but me.
Now I try and do my best.As I said, up at 5.15, work, then home for 20:00. Grab some food and then sleep and then try and placate the wife. I have the most beautiful 7 month old daughter and I only see her at weekends. Not because I am divorced, but because I work a million hours a week trying to look after you ungrateful f*uckers.
Now, when it comes to awards, I am not nominated this year. I would like to think that its not because I am not worthy, but that its because I spend 12 hours a day *every* *single* *day* making sure you have what you need, and I dont have time to canvas for votes. Whatever.
If I was nominated then I would at least expect the courtesy that I can send an email to you stating the fact. I dont get a bonus on being nominated or awarded - I get personal satisfaction and a feeling that I am doing the right thing and doing my best when people take the time to nominate me.
If you dont like it, well then f*ck you. You get many more emails every day telling you about THE LATEST AMAZING OFFER yet you cant take the time to filter through the emails that give one person in the world a bit of validation about their sh*tty job and the affs they have to deal with on a daily basis who make their life hell.
So I say bring it on. Aff Managers of the world unite. Sing your praises and ask people to vote for you. You might p*ss people off. They might be so secure in their roles that they can take time during the day to complain. But they dont know, like we do, that a nomination (let alone a win) on your cv is worth more than any other reward you can get.And thats the only validation that you will ever receive. Tragic isnt it
In conclusion - we dont blog or hassle affiliates about what you do, so give Account Managers their 5 minutes of glory to build their cv's up and get recognised for the work they do. Even if you dont dont agree. Humour it.
And I am still not nominated
(And I will probaly be forced to edit this in the morning...meh)

classic post .. love it
@everyone else
a popularity contest is just a popularity contest.. it does not necessarily reward those that excel .. just those that chase popularity.

Neil well done for having balls :-) Don’t agree with you cause I think anyone that needs an Award has mental problems but if you win one but didn’t need it then that’s another matter. For me the only one that counts is the community one, for the bloggers because most of them are not paid to share advice, champion the industry etc, they are doing it out of love and they conduct themselves like everyone one else should consider doing.
Thanks and let the best man/woman win type of thing.
*If I am upsetting anyone that “works” in the industry, I will take a leaf out of Neil’s book (cause he is the man) and say “well then f*ck you” LOL.. Neil’s a legend!
