How old is the site? Could just be early days move around.
Google has decided that it doesn't like one of my affiliate sites and has now indexed it on page 19 from page 1. I'm pretty sure it was because it was unintentionally stuffed with my main keywords but this has been remedied. Is there actually a way of identifying what the problem is or does Google does this at its discretion? I know that Google loathes affiliate sites so could this be another reason?

I guess the cliche is to say add more content and get some backlinks. Not sure about time frame, mine tend to come back quite quickly or never come back at all.
I've found huge fluctuations can go on for 3-5 months and then sometimes the site will never come back, depends how much competition your up against i guess. The mysteries of Google.....it'll mess your head up.

Been reading the 'New sites and serps' thread by mickn88 so it could be the sandbox thing where Google tries to rank your site appropriately like a baby trying to shove a star toy in the circle slot. At least Yahoo is consistent when ranking your sites.
I'd overcooked the keyword (30% lol) in a home page and was slapped down to 100+. I'm now page 3, 6 weeks after making the changes.
Webmaster tools can give you clues as well as speaking to the guys on the webmaster forum , some of who work for Google

Thanks for the suggestions/info folks. I requested for my site to be reconsidered by Google so will need to add more content before they review it and consider it to be a 'thin' affiliate site.
My site has now dropped to page 22 but ironically I made my very first affiliate sale a couple of days ago and 2 sales yesterday even though my site has been indexed for about a month and it was on page 1 for its first 3 weeks. I'm not sure if I want to go back to page 1 now.
