Here's a real problem I come across on my sites:

I make a website about a range of products and, by the time the site is established in the SEs, many of the products are no longer available. The link instead redirects to the merchant's home page.

On certain sites, I have written a page specifically about that product. I end up with many pages that are listed well in the SE's but that are based around a produc that no longer exists.

At the moment, I don't remove pages like this. Instead, I have something like 'try this product instead'. But this seems kind of sloppy. Over the years many pages like this will build up, which aren't ideal surely from the SE's point of view.

I'd appreciate hearing how other affiliates deal with this issue.
