Dedicated Server - Pros, Cons and Recommendations?

    Hi Everyone

I am at a point where I would like to move one of my sites to a dedicated server. It currently sits on a heart reseller account but as far as I understand it, its best to be on a dedicated server when the traffic and revenue justifies it.

I saw Hearts dedicated server offer starts at £80 which I thought was cheap compared to some advertised

Please could anyone who uses a dedicated server let me know the pros and cons as well as a recommendation

If you do not wish to reply here, please could you pm me

    Many Thanks, appreciated

    RF

Dedicated servers are good... but you have to remember a few things

Heart Offer, is for the basic version only, most cases you will need the upgrade.

You can host as many sites as you like on there, limited only by your harddrive space, do bear in mind that you get 2 ip[s (i think) free rest are all £12 soething a year.

Personally i only use a dedicated server if the site makes 3 times the month cost of the server. If that is the case I often opt for a powerful server. Also As i am very bad from scripting side I prefer to once with some sort of c panel interface.

Better it many case to go for a virtual dedicated server (VMWare) and use the savings to pay for server admin services. Computers are so powerful these days it is unlikely that one site needs the full grunt of a dedicated box.

I have a Heart Internet dedicated server (windows) - Not had any problems with it at all, and aslong as your ok with root server administration, then you'll have zero hassle.

I've had a couple of the Fasthosts dedicated servers as well, and theyve been good as well. Some people may have had a bad experience, but for me, the servers have been stable, and needed little maintenance to keep them ticking over.

If you're not comfortable in managing your own server, then it might be best paying the extra for "managed support" - although at what level the support is, changes from host to host.

re: VPS - had lots of problems with virtual private servers (probably just me) - They seem like a perfect cost effective solution, however it is just glorified shared hosting... so if someone elses VPS brings down the server, it could possibly have an affect on yours.

Hmm, are you sure about that? They each have their own OS, dedicated memory, and processor power, which by my understanding means that other sites on the server can't crash you.. I might be misinformed, but I thought that was the whole point of them..?

Just my opionion and experience. To me VPS is like having a sports car with a lawnmower engine :-)

Yeah, but a lawnmower engine is more than adequate for 99.9% of sites. And a 2010 lawnmower engine isn't the same as a 2002 lawnmower engine.

Just something else to put into the mix.

I had a site that was dragging down every host I tried because of a huge spike in activity in the run up to Christmas. I moved a few times until I settled at tsohost on their clustered solution. The site didn't miss a beat whereas other shared hosting failed me. At £19.99 p/month it could be cost effective.

The only thing I found was that I didn't get the MySQL config that I wanted ... I resolved that by taking on a basic VPS (also from tsohost), but configured purely as a database server. So for £40pm I have a fully managed and scalable/burstable solution that really works for me.
