The way I understood it is if you even store peoples email addresses then you need to be registered.
Are you not yet?
Am i right in thinking that if i was to take more information from my members, including name, email, address, postcode, sex etc, i would need to register with data protection?
My understanding is that if you can personally identify someone from the data collected, then you should register. Is that about right?
But if you mis out the address/postcode part you don't?

its best to be registerd if you take any information "just in case".
Its only £35 a year.
youll be listed on the DP page

If you take "bio" data then you need to. If you take attitudes, genders, addresses, occupations etc then you need to. Simply collecting email addresses you don't need to - but please confirm this.
As far as I know getvisible is right, I only needed to register recently because of a dating site I opened, (taking identifiable details) all my other sites that just took an email and a password did not need to be covered.
However its only £35 to register and can be placed as a business expense, so my advice is to register anyway.
you can find out everything you need here http://www.dpr.gov.uk/ download - Notification Exemptions - A Self Assessment Guide - and all will be revealed

Have you done the form - think designing an inter-stella rocket is easier!so my advice is to register anyway
From what a solicitor friend told me is that with just email address', if the user has control over his/her address...ie. unsubscribe/subscribe then you don't.....and he thinks that even if you store more info about the person and they have control then you don't...but then he said its better to sign up!!!
I don't think there is any particular law regarding this yet.
Safer to register though,
Take Care

I still have nightmares about Data Protection - something we had to learn inside out whilst working at the extrafax - when it came to registering for the site I simply phoned the dataprotection place and asked them - spoke to a lovely young man with a Leeds accent who was ever so helpful - so if in doubt ring.

Wow, i don't normally get so many replies to my questions. But then i guess i'm normally more confused than everyone else LOL
I had looked at the site before posting here, i always try to do the homework first, but i got more confused than i was to begin with by reading their site
At £35 a year, you're all very right. I should just register anyway. I don't hold enough information to be able to identify someone, no address/postcode etc. All members have access to their profile to change/delete details too, but best to be safe.
Cheers all
Carl
