are you on a linux server or MS?
(aslo 1&1 have been a complete pain in the ar$e for me too)
back off holiday totally jetlagged and need to put a 301 permanent redirect on my pages - revamped site, used SSI's, changed .htm to shtml, don't want to lose search engine placements - but having terrible problems getting the 301 to work and 1&1 help hadn't even heard of 'permanent redirects'!!!
so can someone please take a look at this -
redirect 301 /allkids.co.uk/childcare.htm http://www.allkids.co.uk/childcare.shtml
and tell me where I've gone wrong - 'cos its simply not working - I've tried every variation I can think of but its no use.
changing from Frontpage to Dreamweaver so I don't know if thats causing the problem - uploading it using ASCII.
Been sat here since 8.30 and not even dressed yet - and not a pretty site - I would have put this request in the techie bit - but not many people seem to go down there.
Cheers

Hi Elaine, your on a Linux based machine running Apache/1.3.29 (Unix).
You might need to put your full path name in 1&1 should tell your that.
something like
301... /kunden/site3/ht009289/htmldocs/allkids... http://www.allkids.co.uk/childcare.shtml
Sorry its only a guess, but i had to find something similar for some one building a site for me on my one and one hosting
Good luck

thanks for your help - I've got it sorted now-
redirect permanent /childcare.htm http://www.allkids.co.uk/childcare.shtml
- is working OK. Brushing your hair and getting a shower works wonders.
Cheers

I think that if you try:-
redirect 301 /childcare.htm http://www.allkids.co.uk/childcare.shtml
then that should do the trick, although I have been fiddling with 301's recently myself so i will have a root round for what i did if that doesn't work.

This could be the answer for a problem since redeveloping one of our sites.
Before I launch in to it am I correct in thinking that you need one line in the file for every page in the site - which raises another question - is there a maximum size for a .htaccess file?
the main problem was having spaces in the URL - wont work with spaces so have had to do a manual redirect on those pages and I had to change 'redirect 301' to 'redirect permanent'.
I've done over 40 pages so far and its still working OK
If you want to keep your position in the search engines you need to do every page or you can implement the 'redirect permanent' to point to your home page only - gets the page impressions up but loses SE placement for your popular pages.
