The lead-up to Christmas has seen traffic to the UK retail industry reach an unprecedented high, with the sector receiving more than 10% of Internet traffic for the first time ever this month.
Traffic to the Hitwise 'Shopping & Classifieds' category cracked the 10% barrier in the week ending November 29, when the category reached 10.2% share. Since that date, traffic to the category soared to over 10.5% for the week ending December 6, and currently accounts for 10.4% of all online visits for the week ending December 13.
One of the retail segments which has benefited most from this increase in traffic has been 'Video & Games' - highlighting the popularity of DVDs, videos and games as Christmas gifts. The category currently holds 6.7% of market share in the 'Shopping & Classifieds' sector, an increase of 30% since the beginning of November. The leading site in the 'Video & Games' category is Play.com, which holds a staggering 19.9% of market share within the 'Video & Games' market - up more than 2% from 17.8% for the week ending November 1.
