Sites with 1000's of links

This maybe a daft question but when you see websites with say 8000 links for example, how on earth are they doing it?

Would I be right in saying, alot could be run of site links or just people/companies getting 10's of links day?

You then see a site that has say 500 links ranking for similar keywords so just would like to know im on the right track, in theory?

I can copy with competing there when going to a more competitive area but if they are unique sites, im loosing before I have started

A lot of those links may be internal links
A lot of those links may be rubbish scraper links
A lot of those links may point to remote pages deep within a site
Size doesn't always matter! The SE algos are much more complex than just relying on link counting.

Its just number of links from pages, not sites. For example, one of my sites has 15,000 pages, another has over 50,000 pages. If you were to get a link in the footer then you'd have that many links. But before you get excited and send me a PM for a link .. its not worth more than one link as Google only counts the links from websites as quality links.

M8, just followed the link in ur sig and it takes close to one minute to load, not trying to piss u off but its very slow

I have always avoided getting run of site links from sites incase I got a penalty from to many links at once from large sites

We were, but you mentioned content before links so thought you meant onpage
