Anyone else seeing the new Google update - Google Instant? Pretty cool stuff. Wondering how it will affect a lot of merchant and affiliate businesses from an SEO perspective.

As far as i can see it is nothing more than an auto complete text box which also updates the results as you type (and only if you are signed in)

Obviously this may have an impact on consumer search behaviour but this is something everyone has to contend with (even merchants themselves).

I really don't see what everyone is raving about.

    It's nothing new. Is it?

from a personal view i find it really annoying to see the page bouncing around as i type, turned it off straight away.

It certainly increases the number of higher paying ads put in front of people's eyes - I wonder what the effect will be on click rates given that I am being shown hundreds of ads that have nothing to do with what I am searching for?

My concern here is purely based on distraction. We all know already that internet users have "online ADD" and this just sort of adds to it in my opinion. It adds more distractions, and while no one can really predict the future I wonder how this will change exact keyword searches, and have an impact on long-tail keywords.

Instead of typing in "how to get my dog to go pee outside" a user may simply type in "how to get my dog" and see the site/answers they need without completing the search.

Thus, would it not have an impact on all those sites that rely on their high ranking for long tail keywords? And affect the statistics when it comes to keyword phrase and search term analysis?

Interesting point you make regarding keywords - for example, if you set out to search for 'petrol hedge trimmer' under Google Instant you will get loads of sites that sell them showing up in the results after just searching for 'petrol hedge', giving searchers the opportunity to visit a site without completing the full search phrase - so does this mean the Google keyword tool will be recording 'petrol hedge' as a highly searched for keyword? It would make keyword research using the tool a nightmare if this was the case.

I should guess that click - through will play a bigger part from now on - rather than the actual search term. So, taking your example, petrol hedge is a low volume key phrase but has 98% click through for petrol hedge trimmers which does have high volume. I can think how that would be of a bigger benefit to advertisers than the current system?

Exactly what my initial concern was.

However, I guess there is opportunity in everything, as you could potentially rank for lesser searched keyword terms and then steal traffic from other sites with high rankings.

For example, say there are a ton of exact keyword searches for "dog kidney failure". That means there is alot of competition for that term and it could be hard to rank on the first page for it. However, there may be very few actual searches for "dog kidney" as it isnt a complete search term or anything like that.

So potentially, you could put all of your focus into ranking #1 for "dog kidney" and have your site show up on a search and be put in front of the users before they even finish typing their complete query.

Thus stealing a good chunk of traffic from the sites that have worked so hard to rank for "dog kidney failure"

Of course, I admit it may be a bad example, as most sites ranking well for dog kidney failure will rank well for dog kidney as well...but hopefully you can understand the logic behind my point anyways.

Or i could be completely off course, and it could do the exact opposite....as no one really knows how it will work...except for the men and women at Google HQ...

I think your thoughts are the same as mine on this one. It's worth remembering that google needs to keep advertisers on board and giving them better information will help them achieve this?

But isnt bending over backwards for the advertisers the reason why Yahoo failed miserably and Google took over in the first place?

Just tried it, it p**sed me off right way. As a normal user I would never used it.

Google, if you read this...cut it out... stop showing off and keep everything as it is. There is a limit to how often people like change (if at all) before they....goto Yahoo

Time will tell I guess. It's always going to be a fine balance between attarcting advertisers and satisfying existing users, any search engine is going to have this problem because just giving people search results isn't a viable business model?

I found it quite annoying too - maybe I'll get used to it? I can see the benefits when it moves in to mobile search though.
