    Hi all,

    Was after some advice.

I've set up a number of successful aff sites and would now like to go travelling the world on the proceeds, is there a way that I can take a laptop and still work while I'm away with a global isp satellite or something like that. I;m not very tecnically minded so any advice concerning costs etc would be very grateful for.

    Many thank

    Tiger

Havent vodafone just brought something out that plugs into your pcmcia slot on a laptop? Only problem I guess is phonecalls, and whether you get shunted with huge mobile phone bill at the end of it.

Beware - very expensive in Brazil - ran up a £900 phone bill in 1 months on my works phone when I was there lol

2 way satellite would do the job, but it still depends a bit on where you are going.

The sats used are geo-stationary, so each has a particular footprint of coverage. Best bet would be to pick one with a wide footprint and plan your travels around the coverage.

Good news is that the prices are pretty sensible these days & speeds are better than ADSL (depending on your package of course).

Only satellite ISP i have used is bentley telecom. (www.bentleytelecom.co.uk)

Hi, I know a few freinds with the vodaphone card.

You can use your own simcard and put into the card or get a separate sim card that stays in the mobile card.. I think it costs about £150 for the card and sim and then there is monthly rental. There are different packages for different users. If you do not use the internet alot it seems viable, but to up and download anything costs alot of dosh If you just wanted to view the web it would only cost the line rental. I looked at it for my business but the costs of using the web rather than just viewing put me off.

I think orange are bringing out a version although i am not sure!!

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

Why not simply pay someone to look after your sites at home via a revenue share or something. At least that way you'd get to enjoy your holiday without worrying about work.

All the major networks do these 'dongle things' now - I think that most if not all of them would work worldwide - I have been thinking of doing the same TBH.

I would chat with one of the guys in an O2 or vodaphone shop and find out how good the worldwide coverage is.

Let me know how it goes - and how reliable/expensive the network is - if you can, would appreciate a user review

lol, the original message is about 5 years old Chris. Eye of the Tiger has seen and conquered the world already ;-)

I've just got back from a one year trip to SE Asia though and there is decent Internet in most towns throughout. So if you have a laptop you can either just go to an Internet cafe or many hotels and guesthouses have wireless too. I didn't try 3G but I'm pretty sure you could buy a pay as you go card in many countries and top it up with data. May be worth while taking a modem 3G with you.

There were a few out of the way places that didn't have any Internet but we just made sure we had offline work to do and would then just upload it when we were back in range.

Can't wait for decent priced portable satellite system to come into the game, I'm in Africa now and the Internet is very sketchy outside major towns. So much to see and so little coverage!

I'm 21 and quit my web developers job in London last Christmas to take 3 months off from my life.

I went to Sydney for 3 months with my laptop, and revamped www enterf1 com from a crappy looking site, to implementing the site you see today.

I used local free wifi like the state librarys etc and then some friends houses that i stayed with. By March 1st the site went live and now its starting to do quite well. Its just needs a traffic boost so that my products are seen by more of the world.

Great feeling being away from it all - just you, a laptop and plenty of bars and girls to find!!!

I would say just take a dinky little netbook with you and a spare unlocked g3 modem with you. You'll be able to use the Wi-Fi at any cafe or bar and if the country has G3 you have the option of picking up a cheap sim card too.

Apologies to bump up an old thread but I'm just wondering, if you were to go travelling around the world and "working" here and there using an internet connection in these countries, is this legal or are you supposed to pay tax or something in each of those countries?

    Thanks for any help

I'm no expert in tax but I think it would depend on how long you are out of the UK for. Provided you are in the UK for a set number of days per year (not sure what the number is) then I think you would treat all your income as being taxed within the UK system.

If you intend leaving the UK for a long time then you should notify the tax office. In most countries you can stay for between 90 and 180 days a year without paying any tax, you'll need to check the rules of each country. Even then, if you do overstay it would be pretty hard for them to prove that you're earning an income if it's going into your UK account.

re: tax, its a UK business paying into a UK bank account, presumably if you were goign around the world, you'd be on 'vacation' and on a visitors visa, thus, logic would suggest you're only liable for UK tax, after all if you had to pay tax in every country simply because you played with some code or answered an email, blackberry users would be screwed.

re: internet access...i can confirm, china, HK, malaysia, indonesia, japan, thailand, australia, and several others have great internet connections at hotels. i can even confirm Kazakhstan (don't ask) has the fasted broad band i've come across.
I dare say the only place i'm doubtful of would be central Africa.
