It's all about balance. I find press release sites play their part in a mix of techniques.

I don't think Google can de-value press releases too much - It's a standard way of promoting any business and I doubt Google will want to upset actual business owners too much! Its all very well annoying some affiliates but if you upset the brick and mortar...
