mmm.. well i suppose most people aren't as stupid as I am and hopefully if not on a hosting provider that backs up as part of their service will regularly back up their sites themselves but if not - do it!
I think i've just lost most of giveasyouget after either a hacker attack or HDD burnout due to excessive sustained load on the server and would encourage everyone not to be such a careless muppet as i have been.
just looking for an old copy now..

I'm the worst for backups.
Hope you find some of your stuff. I seem to remember there were some recovery tools for linux for repairing the filesystem after a bad shutdown. Just did a search for linux scandisk and came up with this - http://yhslug.tux.org/docs/hdtest.htm. It mMight be worth long thru if things can't get worse.
He could probably build the site again the time it would take to get all the pages (over 100k).Originally posted by Mogga

Good idea for smaller sites though

it was all dynamic php scripting but fortunately i think i've managed to salvage most of the site, just need to move to another machine and repopulate the product db then patch up some holes.
can i just say thank FOOK for that!

Out of interest, what sort of backup procedures are people here running?
(This is a totally selfish CYA enquiry. If you guys lose your sites I stop earning too!).
I do all my work on my PC and test it using IIS server which i've installed and then send stuff over to the server.
I don;t work on pages on the server.....this means that i have an exact copy of my website on my PC.
All i need is both HD's to go at the same time and i'm buggered
Carol
Carol,
I do exactly the same - except I have Apache installed on my PC.
I back up on a weekly basis to DVD keeping an offsite copy updated about every month.
All data is kept relating to sites, email and any documents I've had - although I should scan in any paper documents I've recieved too I spose.
I would like to back up twice a week but I'm not that good.
On my home network, I have an extra PC which automatically backups all essential files over night. I then burn to DVD once a month and store it in a fireproof safe. Work is a little more paranoid still.
Was considering having the backup PC run Norton Ghost or something so if things went wrong I could just switch the hard-drives and not even have to worry about restoring, but my girlfriend said I was obsessing.
I have now decided to restore an old copy of my girlfriend that I backed up before she became so critical.
Can't you also use Alexa's "Way back machine" as well?
lol mat
I wish I had a backup of myself from when I was 21
I have copies of most things on my PC and on the web, but I just bought a backup thingy that getvisible posted about a few weeks ago. Its basically a second hard drive connected to your PC via USB or Firewire that allows you to backup whatever you want just by pressing one button on the drive. Its called a Maxtor OneTouch. Seems to be worth the money so far.
I also backup to CD about every 1 or 2 weeks, I reading this I think Im going to buy a fireproof safe.
Server-side: daily backup to second HDD, daily backup to remote storage (on-site but not on-server) location
PC-side: weekly-ish backup of all key data from HDD1 to HDD2, and from HDD2 to HDD1. A week of lost info would be a pain but never fatal. My new machine (I'm still accumulating parts) will have hot-swappable RAID5 drives so should be much safer still. I also have a "totally must-have data" swap policy with a friend of mine overseas (we send each other our password etc. files periodically) in case the PC goes completely for some reason.

Looked at a couple of the "one touch" type devices. Ended up sticking a nice big drive in a crappy old system that was about to get thrown out. Set up scheduler and now have a no-touch device for about £100 .
Sure that I have seen cheapy fireproof safes around for £40 or so. Has to be worth it.
