Just read on the BBC website that Microsoft are planning to silently deliver browser updates for those people with Automatic Updates turned on. XP users will be upgraded to IE8 whilst Vista and Windows 7 users will be upgraded to IE9.

We won't be the first country to have these updates imposed but the fact that there's a plan to do so is great news.

Why? Well for one, I won't be spending countless hours compromising, applying workrounds and hacks for a browser that should have been canned 5 years ago!

Maybe 2012 is gonna be a good year!

I was reading that the other day. Brilliant news......

Far to much time spent on IE6 workarounds in the past.

Tell me about it Alan. How much do you think Microsoft has cost businesses to date. Billions? Trillions? Maybe even as much as Cashback sites, lol

The other risk is the people who dont update their machines

This could explain why the risk of dying in an NHS hospital is higher than if you were under Michael Jacksons doctor!

And as for the others who turn off updates, Sod em! I think Microsoft should update their computers so that they can't use the Internet properly. Oh, just realised they did, when they shipped IE6

Yep, I know Bill Gates does a lot for charity, but I don't think he supports the Overstressed Devloper Hospices around the world.

Good news but I gave up caring about IE6 a long time ago, wasn't worth losing the small amount of hair I have left on my head. Saying that though I'm now trying to sort an issue that shows up in IE8 that works fine in FF, Opera, Safari etc etc so maybe my remaining hair is once again at risk ;-)

I suppose that's the problem, there's always some variation between browsers so little tweaks here and there required to get some consistency. I've already had to make a change to deal with an issue between ie8 and ie9! that's doesn't bode well........

For the moment, i'll enjoy the demise of the one top of my hitlist

This is great news, it's about time!

Those organisations who try to put it down to software, are nothing more than making excuses.

IE9 will do everything that any older version of IE can do, only reason people haven't updated is if they're running XP over 7 .... and that's a foresight almost as bad as running IE6 in my opinion.

Think this is just Microsofts Christmas Present to all you developers out there.

    Just my 2 cents
