Hi there. I'm writing a piece on affiliate marketing for .net magazine. As part of it I'm looking for case studies - folk who started this a small hobby, but now do affiliate marketing full time.

Hope nobody minds me posting this here. If you are willing to be featured in the magazine, please drop me a line with your phone number at ian.harris@futurenet.co.uk.

    Many thanks,

    Ian Harris

    Hi Ian

    Welcome to the forum.
You've certainly come to the right place, sure you'll get more than enough material.

Hope your going to at least mention the evils of Scumware.

I'm aware of it being hidden in P2P software - are there any other cases?

Also - where are you from in Wigan? That's there I'm from!

You should stop promoting pop-up and advert blockers in your (otherwise excellent) magazine. They are having a serious impact on our livelihoods.

It's simply unethical for internet magazines to promote software which blocks adverts. I'm sure .net would not like it if newsagents ripped out all the adverts from the magazine before selling it to clients.

Our content-rich websites don't even have a cover-price to make money - we rely on the ads on our sites for our bread.

All the best and keep up the good work

    Ian,

A very warm welcome to the forum, it's very encouraging to see a publication we subscribe to engaging with the forum.

I have sent you a biog

Just to go off subject slightly, but something very relevant to the hearts of affiliates on the subject on spyware, may I draw your attention to these threads where there is a plethroa of discussions.

    http://www.a4uforum.co.uk/forumdispl...?s=&forumid=53

As you maybe aware Spyware is actually a bigger cancer than viruses or spam, with a number of well known recognised high street & online brands, as well as one affiliate network, being associated with it.

Yes, it does affect us affiliates and even merchants to greater extent but the biggest victims are your average CONSUMER where retailers have a partial responsibility to address the problem, yet most bury their head in the sand in favour of protecting their bottom line margins.

In a quote from The Matrix "I'll show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes"

Those who take the blue pill...well "...the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe" These are the organisations and retailers & network (singular) who shirk from their responsibility....whereby some of us have opted for the red pill.

Would Future Publishing be interested in a roundtable discussion with various editors with the objective of circulating a news article on spyware covering the effects on the consumer and those retailers involved. With Christmas encroaching in what should be a retailers busiest period, this is when a mass awareness would have the greatest impact on the industry and governing bodies actually doing the right thing rather than discussing casually over tea & biscuits.

A significant bulk of a spywares revenue is actually derived from certain pay per click search engines. i.e. 31% of Claria income is derived from Overture...who owns Overture...yep Yahoo. I also saw in a recent magazine publication they praised a 1GB email service, one of which has very close ties with Spyware.

I realise this is a little of topic to your original thread so we could discuss this totally separately. But the affiliate community have provided a large contribution in effort to combating spyware with the objective of online marketing becoming self regulated rather than legislated by government....Thanks to affiliates from this forum creating the awareness to merchants & networks. There is still a long way to go.

Back on topic..I hope you receive plenty of response for your case study and we have sent an email to you with a little biog on how we started and went from hobby to full time. You are bound to find a broad spectrum of characters & personalties here.

Ian, two of the affiliates here where members of the Future Publishing Network a few years back. Jason and myself both used to make lovely loot from the CPM deals that Future made with us via your Maximum PC http://www.maxpc.co.uk/ side however as CPM revenue plummeted in to the abuse, we had to adapt as Affiliates or die... not sure the angle your going for in your piece, but sure loads of people with loads of story's to tell on this forum.

More likely the abyss (although £42 in one month probably is better described as abuse!)
