I've kinda got myself a problem that I have an idea for a site that in my mind I can see how it works but I don't think I can personally build it myself so it does everything I want it to. My problem is how would anyone else go about getting the site done (Aquanuke and Rich probably don't have this problem ) . Obviously I don't want to willy nilly just tell everyone as then anyone could then just go off and build the site for themselves (actually, when they hear the idea they probably won't ), so that rules out the likes of elance and rentacoder I thought. Ultimately I would have to say to someone to explain it but who

How about sticking it all down on paper and work out exactly which parts you can't do then look to farm them out in small chunks so that no one has enough info to nick the idea.

Failing that how about looking for a trustworthy partner who would work with you for a share of the profits?

You could also use a NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) which would protect you from any 3rd party you use using the information that you provide them.

Of course you have the possibility that they do not stick to the agreement, but any professional development organisation will do.

    Good Luck!

I know others here use elance for constructing entire projects. I think the thing is if the elance coders have got the skills but are focussed on just doing odd jobs for people, they are probably not the sort of person that would want to try to make a success of a site/business separately - though really its not that different.

The other point is that, even if you don't ask someone to help you create something, if they've got the skills they could always recreate it from scratch anyway. Keeping quiet probably means you can just get to market first, but thats not normally that big an advantage.

Thanks for the replys so far guys. Ian, I hadn't thought of your idea about putting down the bits I can't do and just outsourcing them.
I did think of the "trustworthy" partner approach, I guess it's just tricky finding someone who doesn't have a mountain of their own ideas to develop.

I can see where your coming from on the elance front Rich, and again, if anyone did want to copy then they could eventually anyway I suppose.

    Cheers
