If going to issue a newsletter, or make your site a membership of some sort, block the following domains from people registering;

trashmail.net
Jetable.org
NetMails.NET

They are all 1 off anti-spam domains

Hold the belief that when the money does come in that it's because you worked hard at some point and not because you got lucky, don't take your foot off the pedal because you think the latter.
Have a plan but never sacrifice flexibility
Learn to ride the peaks and troughs - try not to panic if today's earnings are only 10% of normal - tomorrow's could well be 200% of normal - thats just the nature of the beast.
Never stand still - if you're ever standing still then in reality you are moving backwards.
If you've found a new successful technique or site niche - make hay while the sunshine - what you learnt yesterday someone else is learning right now
Build good relationships with the networks you work with
Never argue with idiots. They just drag you down to their level and then beat you with their experience.
If ignorance is bliss then some of the people I know must be orgasmic.
From a merchants perspective, I see some patterns with successful affiliates.
One thing which stands out for me is this:
Whether they are aware of it or not, the top affiliates set themselves long-term achievable goals, they then work back from these to develop well formed mid-term goals and therefore have a clear daily strategy, allowing them to make rational decisions steering them towards key overall objectives.
This way, smalll set backs are never a defeat, just a learning experience, and big wins are never a destination, just another rung on the ladder.
Set yourself targets, reward yourself when you meet or exceed them.

SPOT ON!Dont put all your eggs in one basket - diversify , diversify and then diversify a bit more.
I believe that this is the PRIMARY tip for continued success as an affiliate.
Tip number 2 is dont get obessed with statistics.
I dont even check my logs any more. You get a feel for what is working without all the reports.
This is very much a trust game too. Tip number 3 is dont get put off by those lying b.ards that you will come across. You eventually sort out merchants/networks you can trust and those you cant.

I see sites disappear most weeks that are better sites than those settled in to the same market sector. Times can be hard when starting out, but you have to keep an eye on the long term. Keep working at it, and it will come together.
Anyone can be a successful affiliate, except for those that give in.
So DONT GIVE UP, is my tip.
content, content, content.
pay for it if you have to, its what makes the money, not the outbound links.
