That's the Jamster "trick," the ringtone is free + a "not so free" ;-)subscription which will be charged immediately, and every month thereafter.
This came up in another Jamster thread, but I think it deserves a thread of its own.
I put some Jamster "Free Ringtone" banners on a site and got complaints from visitors that they were being charged £5 for their "free" ringtone.
I downloaded a tone to check, and got charged (to be exact) £5.11.
I contacted Jamster support and was eventually told that the reason my "free" ringtone cost £5.11 was...
Considering that my phone only plays monophonic ringtones that seems a bit odd. However even if it is true then isn't this "free" ringtone thing a complete con ? Where does it say on the Jamster site that only monophonic ringtones are free ?The reason why you were charged may be that you chose a ringtone that was not for free: those for free are only the monophonic ones.

Try doing a search for jamba amongst the blogging community
and especially in Germany.
They have been upsetting a lot of people.
Hi,
I've also received quite a few complaints - some very irate - and
that got me thinking about how "right" it was to promote
a service like Jamster! that *some* could argue is ripping
customers off.
The brief replies I got (on my thread that didn't mention
Jamster! by name) was tell people to urge caution,
show people how to cancel, and keep promoting.
And what's what I'm doing, for now.
(I did forward my concerns to Jamster! and they said
they take these kind of complaints seriously, and always
look into them!)
Steve
I have had loads of similar complaints from users of my websites as well. I now only promote them via PPC and have begun to take down any Jamster promotions off my websites, as people were getting very upset about being 'ripped off' because the Jamster T and C's are so hard to comprehend.

mmmm... yeh sure...

I removed all Jamster free ringtone stuff from my site, as I don't think its fair/honest/legal to promote a "free" ringtone that in my own experience costs a fiver.
I read the Jamster T&Cs and I'm not sure that they are "so hard to comprehend" I think they just don't reflect reality, and they certainly don't reflect the Jamster customer service line that "only monophonic ringtones are free" .

Stevey, it's real funny that you should write this,mmmm... yeh sure...
as I was also gonna put those exact words in my post,
but decided not to.
(Guess I'm just burying my head in the sand, and not
being as responsible as Barry. Though I'm not sure
why promoting via PPC is okay, whilst promoting on
your site is not. Or are just talking about the
hassle-factor!)

If a company gives something away free, that actually costs £5.
How long before that company decides not to bother to pay its affiliates?
My prediction, Jamsters none payment of affiliates threads will be a appearing on A4U soon.
I think there is a 'Jamster Late payment of affiliates' thread in the TD forum. They do pay, just a month late.
Top Hat,
The ringtone will prob cost them £0.20- £0.30, and that would include development, license and delivery costs.
Missed that, month late aye, wonder if that month will slipOriginally posted by dancey

Coopson, not really sure what your point is.
I was trying to point out that a company that can treat its customers so badly may soon start to treat its partners badly.
ah right.
I read your post, as if it costs them £5 and they give away for free etc![]()
jamster are ultimately owned by verisign. payments should be ok (hope that statement doesn't come back to bite me)
