It's worth checking who you link to. As if you link to 'bad sites' it can hurt your Search engine position.
Hi,
Just doing a spot of housekeeping on one of my sites, and
I thought I'd check the links that I've 'carefully selected'
and placed on my site.
I was absolutely horrified therefore, to find that one of
the sites I linked to contained a nest of spyware that
proceeded to attack my computer (the firewall and
Microsoft AntiSpyware prog. kept flashing warnings
at me. I allowed none of the progs to run, but I was
still seriously infected after the onslaught).
So, does this happen to others? Do you find that what
was a good link is now pointing to some 'nasty' site?
Any (automated) tips of how I can avoid this in the future
anyone?
Cheers,
Steve

hi steve
i use seoelite to check up on link partners - works v. well.
Just been talking with Nic about him writing some software to check links.
I'd like it to incorporate some "quality" checks but I guess once we've done that we're halfway to having a robot for a SE.

Hi,
Cheers for the answers, though it doesn't seem to be
bothering too many out there.
Don't know about seoelite - presumably gotta pay some
money for it.
Once upon a time I paid for Netmechanic to check my links
- I used to be oh so much more conscientious about this
sort of thing, back in the day - wonder if they still offer
such a service.
(Yep, just checked www.netmechanic.com - still offering a service.)
Am gonna have to do something to check my links
every few months, that's for sure.
Cheers
Steve
Its probably got to be something manual at the moment which is a right chore. I do try to check, especially some which I was a bit unsure of. Its almost easier just to not link to people unless you've found their site first.
Theres a free backlink tool here:
http://www.555webtemplates.com/backlinks-tool.asp
Gives you a list of all unique backlinks to your site (or competitors)
Very handy really.
Thanks for the backlink tool, Matt, but it doesn't
help me with seeing if my links out are working.
(I guess it quickly tells me if who I'm linking to
are linking to me, as it were!)
God you could spend ages checking this stuff - it's
probably why I stopped doing it a few years ago!
Eeek!
Steve
I have a script that checks 3 links per feed per week and emails me if they dont all find the product name expected on the landing page - if they dont then I can investiage
For link exchanges I now have a script that checks that the submitted link is reciprocated and also one I can run every few months to see if they are still there, although I rarely bother
Like you steve I just dont really bother with this stuff so much anymore
Thats what our winki site does... ;-)
