Don't have time for a full time job in anything, and my aim is to spend around an hour a day on AM, then I'll take it from there but I can't imagine finding any extra time.

I just drop on it when I can, luckily I only see AM as a bit of extra in the bank.

Trying to achieve being a full time affiliate is quite a task, but it all depends on what kind of wage you are looking at to pick up from being a full-time affiliate. You will probably find also, a more mature affiliate (dare I say in the late 30-40s!) will not need a higher wage as one in the 20’s to get by. Most have their houses paid off by then and I guess it will also depend on what part of the country you live in.

I know a full time affiliate who earns a hell of a lot less than I do, but classes himself as full time because he only needs a hundred quid or so a week to live on. He is in his late 50’s.

So I guess what I am trying to say the older you are the easier the circumstances are to be classed as fulltime.

Graham and I are part time affiliates, both in our middle 50's, and I believe, the older you get, the less materialistic you become. I have a full time job and Graham is semi retired. Both of us are working towards a comfortable retirement. But our needs are simple and we don't expect to earn vast amounts of money, given our late start at AM.

Nor do we want to spend every waking hour glued to a laptop. We intend to fully retire in two years and hopefully our AM will give us a little boost to our meagre pensions and enable us to travel as we wish whilst maintaining the AM as a hobby.

I believe the time to give up your full time work is when your AM earnings are close to matching what you can comfortably live on. The transition could then start slowly by doing something part time for a while.

    Hope that's useful.

Something I've been mulling over for a while and can't quite decide ........

Say you're 40 no kids, house paid for, how much money do you need to have built up to retire completely (0r 90%) and live a comfortable but not extravagant life.

It's amazing how peoples views differ radically on the value needed!

I've always had £1m in mind!

Am a little bemused by the the full or part time affiliate question, I view affiliate marketing as my job, if somebody ask me what I do for a living I tell them I'm an affiliate marketeer (usually gets me some strange looks and can take a lot of explaining), but, full or part time, it's a job and a job I love at that.

Maybe the question asked should be is this your job or a part time hobby?

I would imagine that a good percentage of the affiliate marketeers actrive today started out looking upon it as a hobby. Trouble is the hobby manages to push all other activity aside as it becomes more and more labour intensive.

I had my eye on a million too, next thing you know I had got that and then had my eye on two,
    then three,
    then four...

...oh you meant Pounds, I was thinking of impressions.

    quote fm Julie H

Am a little bemused by the the full or part time affiliate question .........

    ******

Well, the way it sounds will depend on where you are standing.
I asked the question purely based on how I see it at the moment.
I have a full time job, which sadly also has quite long hours.
I also do my aff mktng thru a ltd vat registered company ... director/employee ..... Due to my current job, I only usually really get to look at aff mktg at night or at the weekend. Therefore from my point of view it is not realy not a hobby, and not really a job. It is an income stream like a buy to let flat or personally managed pension. It is just something I do part time, as I start early and can finish late in my 'day' or 'full time' job (cue violins) and then put in spare time when I can. I aim to keep building it up so that it is a.) as low maintenance as possible and b.) could possibly replace a salary one day if I had kids & c.) a fall back in case of redundancy ....

So I guess an idea of how to guage the question would be how much time you spend doing it compared to other things in your life. Full time would be your main or only form of job or income. Part time could be from a hobbyist to someone trying to build a business in their spare time, but simply can't devote the hours as they have a job, and quite enjoy sleeping.

Appologies for the waffle ... hope these makes the question less bemusing.

I think you have set your sights a bit too high and sideways, if you get the meaning. Especially your quote ‘a) as low maintenance as possible’
Absolutely no way can you just build a site and forget about it and hope it makes you money.

If you do find yourself managing to make a go at it fulltime, then you will be putting in more hours than you do at your present job. Once you start a web site and you build up a portfolio of sites, it will be never ending the constant work you have to do, just to maintain the current income level.

Bottom line is you will have to put the hours in and many nights with no sleep (You’ll get used to it!)

Affiliate Marketing is a very, very time consuming and rewarding business or past-time and not to be mistaken as a get-rich-quick scheme.

Even if you do build a very profitable business from AM, one move from the search engines and you could be back at square one, unless your websites are very special and community based.

I think you misunderstand what I wrote. Maybe I wasn't clear.

I may have only been a member of this forum since December, but I have been doing this and have had my company running for a little while longer.
I do not expect it to be no maintenance, but as low maintenance as possible( a relative term). I have a (small) 'portfolio' of sites which I have run for a little bit, and do look to expand, but I stick to what I know, and keep the sites low hastle. E.g. I stay away from say mobile phones and ringtones where new ones appear every second and keep my focus on a couple of niches.
I could do this full time but am not ready to do that yet, and it is not a financial reason. so this as I mentioned earlier is like a buy to let flat, and additional income stream.

I never mentioned or alluded to a get rich quick scheme.

You will also read that from my comments below I was really mentioning how I see affiliate marketing to me, and what I would like to get out of it. I am not here to chase every last £, that is for the likes of you super affiliates hiding out there ...

I am also no stranger to long hours, my (day)job keeps me in the office at some funny times, I also remember when I first started, I was glued to the pc checking my stats every second.

This was really only meant to be a simple post to see the breakdown of people on this forum, and has now become a bit more about me, which is not what I meant. I just wanted to take the forums temperature on how much focus they give to AM.

So ..for the rest of the forum who are out there, if you care .... would you consider affiliate marketing as your full time job, or something you do when you can ...?
