Although less emphasis is supposedly being placed on link exchanges it's very hard to get 1 way links unless you have something very unique or different.
So I would start by exchange links BUT make sure it's only with sites that have a similar topic to your own.
Try doing a search for "your topic exchange links" on Google and MSN. You get quite different results (sometimes) and you should have no problem finding at least 10 decent, on-topic sites that will exchange links with you.
Most will have instructions and many will require that you link to them first but as they will be on-topic even an outgoing link with no return is thought to be worth something.
You used to be able to link exchange with any old site and get a ranking boost but nowadays it's important that you are giving users sites of interest which relate to the subject matter of your own site.
With all the buzz about "Latent Symantic Indexing" this may become even more important.
Hi, do i also need to use meta tags.

Meta tags have declined in effectiveness (when used on their own at least) over the years but using them can't hurt. Don't worry too much about the obscure ones, but description, keywords, title, and maybe the intended audience, update frequency and language ones should be standard fare on your sites - they won't do any harm, and while people disagree about how much they help, the general consensus is that for the time taken they do still have enough value to bother with.Originally posted by hughesa

Hughesa,
What sort of content do your sites provide?
I am always keen to exchange links with travel related sites, or with anything that might be of interest to people who travel. That can get quite broad!
Please drop me an email with a list of sites you want to exchange links with.
James
The simplest, quickest and easiest way to get one way links is by liting yourself on all the web directories you can find. This way it isn't hard to get more than 50+ link, just takes time.
I recommend submitting to all directories that are free and have PR1 or above. Then take a note of what PR your category is for any pay directories and see if it's worth paying later. I only paid for a couple of directory links so far but they were PR6 links in so I thought it was more than worth it.
There is a guide on my site:-

We offer a service to do this for you if you have more money than time.

Theres nothing wrong with linking your own sites together and if you have alot of sites then all the more merrier.
Before PR came about I used to link all my sites just so I could remember them![]()
The slowest, most effective way to build link popularity
is to build a fantastic website where people link to your
site, for kudos or because it would be daft not to.
I'm thinking microsoft.com or amazon.com or weather.com
or google.com or - just to show that mere mortals *can*
do this - http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html or,
back in the day, jimtools.com.
...Build a better site!
