After a five-year slump, the dotcoms are back with a bang. Anyone expecting to find the high-tech industry of yesteryear, however, is in for a surprise. This time around, it's the online gambling industry that is largely fuelling the recent boom in the technology sector. Basing themselves mostly in jurisdictions offering "friendly" tax policies, internet gambling companies experience huge gains with fewer expenses.

In the past couple of years, online gambling companies have been easing their ways from the peripheries of the dotcom universe, to the centre. The greatest indication of this is a move by several online gambling companies to shoot for stock exchange flotation. Party Gaming got the ball rolling last January, and since then rumours have circulated that other companies, including 888.com and Betfair are also eying flotation.
