Hi,
I brought a CD from eBay claiming to have 1 million opt-in UK email addresses, I was wondering if I should trust the opt-in claim and would I cause myself problems if I sent out mails to the addresses advertising my websites?
It came nicely packaged and looks professionally produced (by Butterfly-Media).
Has anyone had experience of this before? or does anyone know of places to obtain legitimate email lists?
Many Thanks

First you have to ask yourself who really deliberately opts in for unsolicited email - mostly people who forget to untick some box somewhere.
Id not use it as at best it is actual optins, but even then half may not have realise or have forgotten they did - and they certainly didnt optin to receiving mail from you - hence spam complaints will be the main outcome
The ONLY email addresses you can trust are the ones you collect yourself. Even reputable companies make mistakes and lists get contaminated with non-optin addresses and addresses just scraped off web pages.
1,000,000 optin email addresses sounds very unlikely.
Never email donotemail@WeAreSpammers.com
Can I give you my email address to check against the list? I'd love to string up the ******** that spam me every day.
If I bought all their products, I'd have a permanent erection, be drugged up to the eyeballs on pills from the pharmacy whilst paying out shedloads to have my site listed in engines, logos redesigned and made, websites redone and paying out for a service that promises to give me 1 million opt-in email addresses. Talk about a vicous circle, I bet some poor sod is caught up in it and has a heart attack by the age of 25 hehe![]()
I even got an email today, entitled spam, from an affiliate window merchant advertising boystuff, as the yanks say "go figure."
Butterfly media is a dropshipper. I have an account with them, but I did it just for a couple of their products - a lot of it I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

Could you let me know which merchant that was please?

I would be very vary of a CD of email addresses as you have no contract with the list supplier and therefore would be subject to being reported for spamming. The list will also be out of date, so anyone who has opted out would since it was produced would still be in there and again you would be liable for spamming.
The best way to aquire addresses is through existing customer base or through rented lists, where you can specify whether B2c or B2B. These vary in price from £90 to £300 per thousand addresses. These addresses would be collected from people who check/ leave checked the box that states "your email address may be used for our partners promotions" (or roundabout).
A good pale to start may be here:

And on a seperate note, I too received an email rom an affiliate window merchant advertising boystuff. This was clearly spamming and so was folowed with a reply advising of the result should i receive another.![]()
Cheers
