Seems to me the choice at the moment is pretty simple.

    1. Start something and see what happens - isn't this basically in the brainstorm stage ? Nothing can firmly be answered yet, nobody has set anything in stone. imo the forum is a good place for collecting ideas and options, but not for evaluating them.

    2. Pick holes in the efforts of people who have tried to start something. Only one result from this: nothing will happen and noone else will feel like picking the ball up.

If you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

If I have a problem, need information or help I post on the forum, answer virtually instant.
With an association, if I have a problem, need information or help, go to next meeting (whenever that is,if I can make it and is close to), discussed, maybe, action to be taken and discussed at next meeting.........................

Quite simple, no figures or personal attacks.
The FORUM is THE affiliates association.

never realised it was an either or situation - the forum or the association - I figured one could quite easily compliment the other.

or it was going to be mandatory to join - I figured we could either join in or not

Its certainly not either or, the association and forum can happily co-exist.

As I've said countless times, if anyone does not like the idea of the association - no one is going to force you to join.

    so what happened then,

... did asos lose money, did we all start to co-exist under the warm wings of kbuddens affiliate association or did "We, the undersigned, call upon Tradedoubler, Paid on Results and Affiliate Future (ASOS USA) to suspend the ASOS affiliate programme with immediate effect" - I had to laugh at that comment.

For the benefit of the ignorant, what happened was that I became seriously ill with Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

The idea of the affiliate association is still very much alive and still imho a very worthwhile aim but will require a large element of time to get it going which is time that at this precise moment I do not have.

Given my illness and the onset of Christmas it is extremely unlikely that the association will now take shape until the Spring of 2006.

In this situation, the best course of action will be to speak with your feet.
If the program is not supported, then it is no longer working.

If it is no longer working, then things need to be changed from the merchant end.

If affiliates continue to use their links, then maybe the program is still working well?

Ultimately, return on investment is the best basis for a programs success. If several program conditions are changed, cookie times are reduced, commissions are lowered etc but the program still works, then this is a good thing for the merchant.

It was mentioned that affiliates are not charities, and this is true. It is also the case that merchants are not charities, and unless a good, effective return on investment can ne realised from their affiliate activities, then things have to change.

    There is a balance.

What happened was most affiliates still promoted ASOS as they did not reduce the default commission whom the majority were on. The only people it affected for a short time were the affiliates that were on higher commissions. How ever, from what I can gather most of those affiliates had their commission reinstated and it was because of the affiliates being vocal, the affiliate community spoke out and the Management were forced to listen. So much was achieved. There you have it a4uforummember :0) Case closed move on!

My thoughts to the original post - there are associations already for businesses in the online media (and more specifically publishing) sector, but any decent association could/would only start to 'take action' where something is illegal or immoral.

Unfortunately a commercial 'association's' role isn't to police the commercial terms of any deal available out there to publishers through the affiliate networks. That's the individual publisher's job isn't it? It's not personal - ASOS change the terms of the deal and affiliates get the chance to keep on publishing for them or to leave - that's how affiliate networks work. ASOS offer whatever deal they want.

If ASOS's deal isn't great any more, people stop running their ads. What benefit does a single publisher or association get from taking ads off anyone's site other than their own?

On the flipside i think more affiliates should try to strike deals direct with advertisers if they have volume. Terms will be better and you can set-up an insertion order to agree the terms in advance for a set period - no opportunity for the advertiser to change terms.

a4uforummember - I have to ask, do you not like Mondays / mornings or have you always been such an arrogant, know it all, mealy mouthed arse? Maybe you get off by having a pop at everybody.

Whatever it is maybe you should read posts properly and think before you post in future.

this post was a very popular one many months ago, it opened up lots of issues.

I have never promoted asos, but the issues that were raised within this post are what were of interest to me and many others. Is it so wrong to have asked how the situation had progressed, a genuine interest in finding out if any affiliate power had prevailed. Was it so wrong to ask? By asking the question did it make me an arrogant, know it all, mealy mouthed arse?

Thank you for the genuine replies and no thanks to the time wasters. Case closed move on.

It's not the question you asked it was the way you asked it and the 'not you' you replied with that makes you an arrogant, know it all, mealy mouthed arse and that's not just for this thread either.
