I'm just doing some research for a ppc campaign using overtures keyword tool but seem to be getting a lot of duplicates coming up. Is there a tool I can enter all my keywords into after that will clear out the dupes for me or can I do it in Excel somehow?

    cheers folks

you can do it in excel by using the DATA filter function

just highlight the keywords you want to sort and then on the tool bar in excel click

DATA > FILTER > ADVANCED FILTER

then check the "copy to another location" radio button on the pop up dialogue box

click inside the 3rd text box down titled "copy to" and then click the spreadsheet cell you want you data to start from. (this will then appear in the 3rd text box)

Tick the "unique records only" tick box and click ok

You newly filtered unique data should appear starting in the cell you want now

Jobs a good un then hopefully

    Cheers folks,

they both work a treat, my lists gone from 750 to 500 though which is a shame - thought I was doing everso well!

While im at it I may as well as is there a way of highlighing and rightclicking/copy paste from the overture keyword tool without taking the numbers of searches too?

Im highlighting the lot and then manually removing the numbers in a spreadsheet at the moment but its taking ages!

replace the spaces in between the numbers and the start of your term with a comma using the search and replace function.

Then Data > Text to Columns > (select delimited) > (select comma)

Click finish and the two lots of info should be in different columns!

    Crazihos,

You've asked the question that I've been meaning to ask for years. You do exactly what I do highlight, copy, paste & remove. A kinda way i got around it was doing a find and replace on all numbers - do this from 0-9 and all the numbers will go in a flash. if replaced with an emptry space or "nothing".

The only trouble is if you are using number sensitive search requests such as typing in "Nokia" would give you a list of all their phones which would look similar to

    132326 Nokia
    35364 Nokia 6680
    21231 Nokia 6230
    etc
    etc

Obviously using my method described above would leave you with

    Nokia
    Nokia
    Nokia

which is pretty crap if you want to keep the phone model numbers

Short of that you could write a small excel macro that would look at the contents of each cell starting with A1 (or top left cell) from the left and ask it to delete all numbers until it encountered a space and then stop, then move down to the next cell in the table and repeat the macro until finished when it will effectively reach a cell at the bottom of your table and stop the macro completely on encountering a completely blank cell.

I was able to write awesome macros almost 10 years ago when I worked as a financial accountant but now have forgotten mostly how to do this. It took a few months to learn advanced macro programming from my recollection but i did some cool stuff and ran practical jokes on my employer who was a technical idiot, such as below.

Working on my undergraduate placement year, I secured a job working for a company which I new would only be 1 year long and that I would be departing from on July 22nd 1996. Whilst in employment there I was tasked with converting all of the old Lotus 123 accounts files into microsoft excel equivalent files and improving them to automate as much as was possible and cut down on work load for other members of staff.

I thus set about learning all about macros (little snippets of VBasic code if I remember) that when actioned would perform pre-designed functions of your so desire(programming).

I set everything up so my boss, who was also a very cool, affable guy could simply turn on his computer, excel would load automatically and reports would be prepared and generated efficiently and without the touch of a single button and than the boot switch on the pc.

Imagine the look on his face when on July 23rd 1996 with me having left their employment the previous day he came into work turned on his computer and an error message displayed informing him that there had been an execution error and that all of his local files had been permanently deleted.

I had set in the macro a piece of hidden code which you would only know was there if you could read and understand it in the first place that looked at the computers internal date and if later than July 22nd (my last day) would trigger a worrying pop up which he would then have to call me back in to carry out work as a paid consultant (much higher rates of course) to fix the "so called" problem.

Of course I didn't charge him, but it goes to show the possibilities and fun you can actually have with macros if you know what you're doing. They will certainly be able to perform any job you ask them to perform short of scratching your back and warming up your slippers.

On that note, I'm off to try to program one now that should hopefully answer your query. It may however take me some months so in the meantime if you've got spare time perhaps you could have a crack at the macro too. First one to release it to the board wins a packet of hobnobs (sent royal mail special delivery - chocolate or plain - your choice?).

Thats cracked it, the find a replace does it for me as I dont have any numbers ones yet...

Didnt realise doing keywords was such a pain. Iv managed 1717 unique ones in 5 hours (excluding the half hour spent highlighting and deleting numbers!lol)but now iv got a stiff neck so im giving up for a while! How many keywords do some people use. Will I really need about 50k??

Thanks for all the advice, id have been here till midnignt if you hadnt told me about the find and replace tool etc..!

Mike, thats a great story about your work....Im sure tiny used the same trick with their computers, they always seemed to blow up just outside warranty!

Which biscuits would you prefer and i'll get em ready to send....i cant see me ever writing a macro, I struggle with html! lol

Ill look forward to yours though mike, Im sure it would help a lot of people!

It wouldnt suprise me if that isnt far off the truth for most manuacturers. Just look at what happened at Y2K. Something as simple as a date change can cause havoc to the untrained eye Still plenty of work for us computer consultants eh ? LOL

I guess its all about knowing the code and how to use for best effect.

    P.S.I am not a hacker!

Got to be McVities Chocolate Hobnobs every time! Postal address will follow with macro
