Something that 'seems' to have worked very well for in the past is using a homepage for the existing domain with plenty of content 'google fool' and then placing a javascript redirect code at the very bottom right of the page.
This way Google seems to read as much of the page as it needs before the redirect cuts in and saves any penalisation.
I'm not saying this is definate, but it has worked for us for the last 5 years.
