got this from a newsletter I get..

Google released GoogleBase this morning. Anyone can add content (news, tips, ideas, notes, book reviews, recipes, job ads, your resume, classified ads, etc.) to Google's index. You can add info to Google and make it searchable, without having a website, a blog, etc.

getting and staying listed in serps is getting more fun every day

The amount of personal information that users are giving away to Google is beyond me. If ever there was a company with too much power this is it.
I downloaded Google Desktop for the sidebar and before I knew it the software was scanning every document on my drive. This is just too much IMO. I also noticed the thread on Google analytics and again you have to wonder why THEY are giving this away as a freebie. Why don't they take your fingerprints, your underwear size and your blood type while they are at it.

I just googled that phrase I said and it turns out that 54,000 other people have already thought of it.

This month's PC Pro magazine has a mildly interesting cover story: "Google - Friend or Foe" talking about the power and penetration of Google into just about everything.

    This is getting scary

our goal is to organize the world's information and make it universally useful and accessible, and "the world's information" certainly includes almost anything you might wish to contribute

Its been scary for a while.

These new features which require you to instal google desktop or frisktop as it should perhaps be thought of... its on the same parr as spyware if you ask me.

I haven't been google's fan for some time - and I'm surprised more people arne't worrying about it.

If this was bill gates instead people would be having huge hissy fits all over the media but now it seems we're scared of the hand that feeds us.

but as far as i understand it google desktop doesn't send your data to google. it's a local index of your files kept on your hard drive. google don't have any access to it over the internet. they just integrate it into the look and feel of google.com by running it inside a web browser.

It's a snoop too far for me. And there could be security holes in add-ons, etc., or ways of hacking into it from third parties. To be honest, it's an issue of trust and I don't trust anyone to index my sensitive data/passwords, etc. Got screwed over the other day for a bit of money and gave me a wakeup call that not everyone has the same principles as myself.

Thats a bit strong isn't it. I can understand Google wanting to keep their index relatively free of Spam, but to discriminate against a whole legion of webmasters is a bit much.

Google get's more and more like the bottom of my desk draw every day. Just throw everything in there, odd socks, ties, scraps of paper, sweets etc everything!. You know it's all in there but only ever get round to spring cleaning once a year. Or in google's case stick your hand in every now and then and give all the contents a shuffle and hope what you need comes up to the top.

Exactly, google desktop is a really useful, excellent tool. Infact google kepp providing us with fantastic tools like google maps and google earth. I don't understand this paranoia which seem to be based on nothing except the possibility that google might do something with some data you have at some point in the future.

    re: google base

Would this be going a small way to try and get in on Ebay's market share?
