    pay per click advertise.

The Ad Block Plus extension can be set up to fraudulently count the impression without showing you the ad. Not ony that, the developer has designed it like this on purpose.

In the hands of an unscrupulous competitor this could be very bad news.

Surely if you pay per click, then the number of impressions is irrelevant.
It's the number of clicks that count.
If a user can't see your ad, because it's blocked, he certainly can't click on it.

On a related note, there is a firefox plugin (possibly linkification?) that will convert text (i.e. unclickable) to links on the fly.
This has the effect that on a google search page, in the ads on the right hand side, the bottom of each ad (where they show the url) becomes just a normal (untracked & unpaid) link to the url displayed.

    Edited for spelling........

The user can't click the ad, but it does count as an impression. That can affect your click through ratio and could possibly get the ad dropped or invoke smart pricing.

    hi there,

there is also an interesting extension for firefox called Grease Monkey. This allows you to slap on DHTML onto your webpage in real time as you view it, a bit like CSS. This allows you to totally customise your browsing experience, for instance, not to show certain adverts or advert scripts like adsense.

firefox being open source is always going to lean to the side of user experience, but i would suggest (with no research to back it up whatsoever) that currently the kind of person that downloads firefox and installs custom extensions, is less likely to click on adverts anyway.

i wouldn't worry though, if it becomes a widespread issue there are always ways around these things.
