"opportunity to register a web address "
Hmmm lets see they want you to buy something.
Here is something that a few of you may be interested, again from the Feb2006 issue of PCPro magazine:
Quote:
Website owners can now sidestep the internet's traditional addressing system and register a URL that doesnt rely on suffixes such as .com or .co.uk.
Dutch firm UnifiedRoot (www.unifiedroot.com) is offering companies the opportunity to register a web address consisting of a single name, with the traditional top-level domain replaced by a brand name.
Under the system, website owners can put as many second level domain names before the dot as they like said unifiedroot's managing director Erik Seeboldt. A brand like Nike for example could have various addresses like golf.nike or soccer.nike, its a very flexible system.
For the system to work, UnifiedRoot needs every computer on the net to point to its root servers, but the company is lobbying ISP's including Tiscali to change settings on behalf of their subscribers.
Does this mean i can ditch DNS and not teach it to my MCSE candidates anymore? (just kidding)
Si
not this old one again! it's a great way to make billions... if only every ISP in the world does you a very very big favour!
But the big question is, dare you sit back and watch, just in case it does actually take off? Chances are it won't, but there's also a chance you could cash in...
Now with NEW! SHORTER! SIGNATURE!
If I post at funny hours, it's cos I'm in Oz!
sit back and watch it fail. it's failed before and it'll fail again.
On a domains related issue. I heard that a new system is going to control what happens to expired .com names.
If I remember correctly, the domain will be held by a central agency and then just auctioned off to the highest bidder. Apparently a cut of the final bid could potenially go to the former domain owner.
The idea is good but (US)$1000 set-up and (US)$250 per year per name, which most people won't even be able to access seems a little wrong. Might work for businesses but I can't really see it taking the place of normal domains for smaller sites.
ROFLMAO are they living in cloud cockoo land no wait their dutch must be some of the old green stuffOriginally Posted by supernova_bbs

that must of been a six o clock in the morning idea whilst pretty mashed up![]()
I recognise that type of idea but its definately not a six in the morning idea, thats about 7:15 eating kebab whilst sat in a childrens bumper car in the middle of a german high street while people are on their way to work kind of idea![]()
But what beats me is if thats the idea and its so terribly daft why didnt they go the whole hog, why dont they have just a name full stop, why would you want .nike when you could have just nike
Muppets manamana doo doo de doo doo
