I am currently working on a webdesign etc and have an idea for the perfect domain name. However, my dilemma is that the domain is already registered to someone else. I have looked at their site and it appears to be a neglected, unused domain (as far as I can tell). What I would like to know is there a process I can go through to contact the domain holder and ask if they would be willing to release the domain to me? The domain is hosted with EASILY but their customer services dont appear to be that well customer focused at the moment.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I apologize if this is listed in the incorrect forum.

    Hi -

You may have done this already but just incase - have you tried getting the email address of the owner or admin by doing a whois search? www.joker.com is normally good for this.

Or you could try the email address webmaster@thedomain.com as this often gets through to the owner.

    Cheers

    Russell

No address listed in WHOIS, except for the registrants agent EASILY.

I have sent off an email to webmaster@ and will wait to see whether it bounces or get a response. Will look for other alternatives in the meantime.

    Thanks for the assistance

    .co.uk

The original one I was hoping for have replied stating that they are still using the domain, despite the fact that the site looks outdated and doesnt actually give any relevant information, but who am I to say

There is another domain, very similar to the one I wanted which doesnt have any DNS entries, no website hosted at the domain but is still registered. I have emailed the webmaster at this address and am hoping to hear back. The good news is the domain expires in April this year so I may have a short but worth while wait for it to come up. I was hoping that I could get in there before the expiry date though so any advice would be great.

I would try offering hard cash.

If somebody asked me about selling a one of my domain names that i've spent a month developing I would probably say no, but if they were offering 10k I would definatly think about it.

I've tried to get hold of a few undeveloped domain names without success. One was only registered a few months before. Contacted the registrants who were a web development company, but it obviously wasn't in their interests to sell the domain name.

I presume you've looked at the WHOIS details for the domain?

If insufficient details are shown in WHOIS to enable you to get in touch with the registrant then you could ask Nominet to supply you their contact details.

I have managed to use the WHOIS facility but it didnt contain the email contact address. However I have emailed the Registrant Agent for the domain and also the webmaster@thedomainIwant to see whether they respond. With there not being a site hosted or any DNS entries I get the impression it may have been registered but not being looked at. The hunt for a new domain starts today!!
