The only speed issue is that you will get slightly faster lookup if the nameserver records are the same TLD as the domain ie..
ns1.xxxxxx.co.uk
ns2.xxxxxx.co.uk
go to
mydomain.co.uk
But we are talking very small numbers.
Does it affect the speed of access to a site if the domain name registrar is different to the web host for the domain? Or does it make no difference really?
The registrar is mydomain.com (USA?) and host is Hostway.co.uk (UK).
I know there's many variables at play, but would like our site to load up as fast as possible.

I wondered the same thing, but after the dns server entry has mirrored around the internet, and its also listed in the who is entries on the registrars page, there really is not much in it.
I tested the time for two identical sites that I had made, pictures in all, and decided that there was not much in it.
I found that http://www.webspaceunlimited.com had some pretty good speed when the other items in the packages on offer were also considered. Sometimes speed is not the only thing to be considered, also the other services on offer to.
I have also taken a look at this ut in all honesty could find no real defining answer as there are so many combinations. The speed on domain lookup, download of the site, the ISP your using to connect, if all three are the same place then there maybe a small advantage, but in reality the combination will change for every user. Even the route taken can change making the results different for the same person looking at the same site on different days, add in the speed fluctuation of the users line to the net and again for the web servers connection, and all in all you end up with no real fixed paremeters to test for speed.
