Is that special is it?
Technology: King Kong to become first movie available to download in the UK on the same day as DVD release.
Is that special is it?
Nothing to see here...
At £20 per download it'll have to be pretty bleeding special to sell.....
hi you 2
the purpose of the post was to show if film co's are now having this offering will it impact on the current film routes? Namely Blockbuster shares are down from $10 last year to around $4 this year due to the vast amount of competitors now available in the online dvd hire/share outlets.
Like most things, over time this £20 cost will eventually drop...but by offering the films direct to the consumer are the film co's bypassing the necessity for any middlemen (ie high st shops/online retailers -ie us affiliates)? what other sectors will follow?
Certain record labels aready offer similar direct contact...
I've been looking forward to and preparing for film downloads for years. It will be great from an affiliates' perspective. Here's why:
Booksellers pay 5-7% commission to affiliates on the sale of print books
Commission rates on digital books i.e. ebooks are often around 50% to 60% as there's no printing costs, need for warehouses, trucks, supply chains, postage costs, pulping etc.
UK online DVD stores have a de-facto 'cartel' which means they all pay a standard 5% on the sale of DVDs.
Film downloads, without the need for the aforementioned overheads, should result in far higher commission rates. They might not be 60%, but will be considerably considerably higher than the derisory 5% on DVDs. Just found a company yesterday which is paying 30% on movie downloads. Lovely jubbly.
So, from that perspective, InternetRetailer has a good reason to post - as it could result is commission increases of a few hundred percent for affiliates.

Would be better if they offered a 'without' DVD option for around £7.
Agree with AZAM should be a big boost if affiliate programs are offered - any network who wants early adopters let me know!

The relevant parties have put tens of thousands of man hours into negotiating with movie studios and building the technology and, rest assured, when they do launch, there will not be a single person in the UK who does not get to find out about itOriginally Posted by dunklk

Some smaller studios have been planning to to release new movies in all formats, at the same time. So the film, DVD and I gues the online version, all come out on the same day. This is, in part, a response to piracy fears.
I worry that affiliates could soon be cut out of the pie on downloadable content, as the media owners look to cash in on the streamlined supply chain they have developed.
