I've spent the last couple of days trying to find a decent domain for a new site.
Obviously everyone spends time messing around adding and changing words when trying to search for a name so though maybe we could list some that we try that could maybe help others if they hit a block on word combinations.
I'm basically on about having the main word and then sustituiting lots of beginings/endings to find one available.
I'll start the list:
web
net
internet
online
uk
zone
world
site
i
e
shop
cheap
deal
offer
Feel free to add your own, I could do with the help

I know a guy who added a stop word to every high earning product he could think of -- www.the-keyword.com. Some didn't make sense, ie the-insurance.com (for clarification only, don't know if he had this)
He had at least 250 sites
He made a big bundle, until g$$gle and some tm'd companies got shirty, the domains either got banned or he gave them up because of tm issues, lasted for about 6-months, don't think he's too bothered cos he made a million, no exageration...some are even now floating about in cyber space![]()
Don't think it would work now...but Mmm
I'm never really convinced by the whines about lack of domain names, I've always managed to come up with a few reasonable ones for any project I've come up with so far, and never gone further than 1232-reg for them.
My favourite techniques are:
1) the lazy way:
www.nameboy.com
2) the posh public school educated way:

or
http://www.kypros.org/cgi-bin/lexicon
You'd be surprised how many memorable names you can get from the second version. No good for type-ins, but then how many really are?

I was reading this article about spyware comanies getting what's coming to them

and found this right next to it

B**ger me if Callidus isn't the name of a mate of mine's surveyor business which he came up with using exactly the link above. Hope it's not the same bloke

I'm not whining about it, and usually I would have just gone ahead with one of the variations I have found but I'm after keeping the name as short as possible and at the moment relavant words for it are not springing to mind.Originally Posted by Shine
Like you say there are plenty of names available to register out there and usualyl I would have grabbed something but in this instance I've not.
I thought the list idea would be good for users to the forum incase anyone wants a few ideas thats all.

mate.. you're obsessed with adjectives, you need more nouns. The fact that you seem prepared to stuff adjective after adjective with hyphens in between show that the imagination is lacking, and that you are not looking for type in traffic, so be imaginative. choose your words and surround them with adverbs and nouns.
you'll never run out.
Wardy, that comment was not aimed at you at all. Apologies if it came across like that (yesterday was a long day).
I've seen a few other posts elsewhere suggesting that domain names should be some sort of common property that should be shared out in soemthing akin to an online land grab. Some sort of virtual "Far and Away".
Your post is a good idea or I wouldn't have bothered replying.
Very useful thread this. I just found a cracking domain using these ideas!
That being the case, I thought I should share my own method of finding nice, short domains for sites. I usually pop in a cool-sounding word at the start that seems to suit the industry.
i.e "UberShoes" etc
Sometimes I use a trendy-sounding colour to try and make it sound more generic... but these are increasingly hard to find (but are still out there if you have time to look). i.e blue, gold to form something like "casinogold".
No type ins to be had... but I think the right combination can create a great sounding domain.

A couple of weeks ago I was given a website to do, they wanted a .co.uk domain and based on the words visual arts. tried the hyphens etc and added the web, online, to the domain but none of them looked right. In the end I found visart.co.uk small catchy and easy to remember. So now I will look for the smaller name variations first.
