.com domain wanted - how to get it?

I would like to register a .com domain that expired in mid-May.

Usually I register my domains from 1&1, which I would like to do with this one - but 1&1 is saying the domain is already registered.

I know there's a period of time in which the domain can be renewed after expiry by the original owner, but how do I know how long this is?

WHOIS is now saying that the domain is 'not registered here'.

I am quite keen to get hold of this domain, but I don't want to have to register/pay for a drop catching service. I doubt anyone else will want the domain.

Can someone give me advice on what I have to do to acquire this domain?
