I'm just about to launch my first site, for which the domain is structured as 'www.thedomainname.co.uk'. However, I just missed out on the 'www.domainname.co.uk' version and when I contacted the owner he offered it for sale at c.£1,000.

Is this worth it? Ok, I know it's a lot of money, but I'd like to develop the site and maybe even transfer to being a merchant eventually. I suspect for the level of sales I'm looking at it's not worth it, but part of me would like to protect my new 'brand'

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks a lot

My personal opinion would be that if this is your first venture, try and make a go of it with the domain you already have. It's good enough, and you will learn a lot about how to make your site successful, and hopefully become PROFITABLE. After all, that's what it's all about.

That said, if the amount being asked is peanuts to you, then the money they are asking for domainname.co.uk is not at all unreasonable, and in my view just the domain alone is a good investment at that price. However, not having the domain will not prevent you making a success of your site, and it is always good to keep your costs low for your first venture. There will always be other opportunities to go for and other domain names to buy, new sectors come along all the time.

    All the best

It can be worth it if the name is memorable and makes it easier for people to get back to your site.

I think site design and content is actually more important, but in the scheme of things £1,000 isn't a huge investment assuming you will make money from the site.

Checkout domainprices.co.uk for UK Domain Name sales values, it may help you to gauge the pricing by the seller.
