Any advice on all aspects of directing traffic to a new site please

Hi Guys.

How you all doing?

A friend of mine is setting up a ceramics and pottery shop on a shoe string(a real one - not a virtual one - well real shop and virtual shoe string :-p... )sorry, back to the thread. Essentially I've volunteered my services to get him set up with a CMS and web site.
I'm self taught at CSS,ASP,etc and am technically pretty good however - it's all been local projects and intranets thus have zero experience at drawing in traffic. I now work with an email marketing company so am reasonably au fait with the basics of affiliate marketing.
This is the crunch though - I have zero (and thats a big fat zero)
experience with seo and ppc, adwords,etc,etc...
I was wondering whether any of your good selves might be able to point me in the direction of any decent learning resourses - be they hard copy or online.
I am aware that each individual aspect is very in depth and constantly changing however I am comitted to this one and determined to give him as good a start with the internet side of things that I am capable of. I have about six weeks b4 he opens. All the initial marketing will be terrestrial marketing and smooching up to important people so I have a little time to start learning.

A good place to start learning about adwords and ppc in general is https://adwords.google.co.uk/select/steps.html. Plenty of good info there.

Seo is the hard part (it has been for me anyway )
