    Hello,

I occassionally read posters making comments about DW's FTP capabilities.

Are DW's FTP capabilities sufficient for someone running a few sites/forums wth general putting and getting or would an FTP package be more appropriate?

What does an FTP package do that DW doesn't?

If FTP package is better then which one????

    Thanks

    Si

I have never actually used the FTP which is built into DW, I started off using WS_FTP but found that started to bomb out on large sites and when left alone for an hour or so.

So I changed to CuteFTP and it works fine. Those two seem to the main players but there are many others around including free ones.

I use both dreamweaver and an FTP

The only benefit of a FTP over DW I've noticed is it's easier to change permissions for files and folders, DW doesn't always work for me when trying to change permissions.

"I use it for 1 page uploads at a max"

ahh fair point.. most sites I still use it on are probably 30 odd page sites or maybe one of a couple of 100 to 200 page ones, anything else I have runs on a custom built CMS so It's been a long time since I uploaded more than a few pages at one pop..

Fraser recommended the fireftp add-on to firefox. It works in a browser window. I find it excellent and very easy to use.

I only use the DW ftp occasionaly but as matt has said only for one page uploads.

Dreamweaver ftp sucks - Ipswitch WS_FTP is pretty good and is widely used commercially, well at least I have been given it to use in 3 different web companies...

Dreamweaver FTP sucks. Use Filezilla too. It's great and it's free

Dreamweaver FTP has traditionally sucked bigtime but since v8 it at least works in the background. There's also extra detail and logs which you can look at when needed.

I maintain a 500+ page website using the built-in ftp and it works fine and offers the opportunity to use the site-sync features (which I only use on smaller <30 page sites).

As Share mentioned if you want to tinker with CHMOD, file permissions or anything "clever" it's worth using a dedicated ftp application.
I've been using CuteFTP for years and it's pretty comprehensive and easy to use.

    So to summarise... BOTH

I used to use DW FTP all the time, and had some problems, although on the whole, it kinda did the job!

6 months ago i found CuteFTP and have never looked back - it works great!! And in my opinion is actually less complicated then the DW option!

I'm sure there's others even better than Cute, but there's nothing it can't do that i need it to!!

Use DW ftp and WSftp, find DW ftp good for quick changes have it set to upload page on save, never had any real problems with it. WSftp I use for uploading bulk files and retrieving logs etc.

I use dreamweaver to maintain a few sites and use the built in ftp to upload changes from dreamweaver, but also use coreftp when I need to download or upload any specifics, or look for certain files etc
