They're still happy for affiliates to bid on their brand in Google though!

What a load of rubbish, would they rather of had them parked and not got any customers at all?

Dell, sack your pompous online marketing manager and get someone in who knows what proper log file analysis in.

Even better still, try using your brain and register the misspell of the domains in the first place. Just hope other companies dont follow suit

dodgy dealing working like this though.

i'd rather register a misspelling (typo, rather than close misspelling actually), and promote a close rivals products - no possible comeback on that one.

If im typing in d3ell.com what do you think im looking for? If I type in d3ell.com and hit a parked domain chances are im then going ot look at my URL bar see my mistake take out the 3 and hit enter.

Alternatively the parked page will be carrying a PPC feed of some sort, miva, google, overture etc and the top result is likely to be a dell ad, click that.

They'd still get the customer

Re: Dell Sues Typo Domain Affiliates

Personally I can see where dell are coming from. If they had that ruling in their program term and conditions then its clear that these guys where acting irresponsibly by buying and advertising on those domains.

Typos like that would not, in my opinion, result in a lost sale if the domain had not been registered or there was a competitors site under it - they would just retype the dell domain name that they were meant to type in.

This is another interesting article that sound a bit unfair of dell, but dont know how true it is:-

What I can't understand is why they were accepted on Linkshare in the first place.

Surely it is the responsiblity of merchants to approve the affiliates when they join the plan. By accepting sales from the affiliate they have entered into a contract with the affiliate. Or should they be sueing Linkshare.

I can't see the validity of the other case against dell websites which Barry mentioned surely you should be allowed to trade under your own name.

Perhaps the next to go could be Monty Python for the misuse of their trademark in the Children's Story sketch:

Hi,

Take a look here --

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01...omain_dispute/

Dell are very protective of their name. Also No affiliate can use a Dell URL. Then take a look here --

http://www.google.fr/search?hl=fr&q=...chercher&meta=

http://www.google.se/search?hl=sv&q=dell&btnG=Sök&meta=

Then do a whois ( http://www.whois.net/) for certain 'Dell' domains advertising on the right hand side.

There seems to be double standards everywhere.

Umm, one of the Swedish 'dell sites' appears to be reg'd to an employee of a certain Scandic network.

Re: Dell Sues Typo Domain Affiliates

Dell have a 'closed' group of affiliates that are allowed to bid on their name, they are generally affiliates who create alot of revenue from other sources and keywords as well. I presume its a little 'reward' for all the hard work that they have put into promotions in the past.
