Adwords - Phrase, exact or broard ?

hi

In the past i have worked for companies who have had very large advertising budgets and therefore could afford to just create adword campains put high cpc and just forget about them, now moeving into the affiliate field i need to be rarther more focused, there is one issue whitch i have not bothered dealing with untill now.

In Some campaigns i have ran i had my list of key words then wrapped them all in "" and [] and submitted them all three times one brad match one exact and one phrase match, i know some of the adds would take prioraty and some would stop working due to them being in compertition but i left google to decide witch would be displayed. This seemed to work well but did not seem to give prioraty to exact match key word which i thought was strange.

So what i need to know is how to make an educated decision in which key words to wrap and weather to make them exact, broard or phrase matches? or is the way i was doing it ok?

Hi,

I reckon it's all in the Cost per Conversion. But I'd (just about) always have the exact match variation - inevitably a higher conversion rate, and a lower cost per conversion. But ofter ranks poorly (due to this I guess).
The other two are normally 'suck-it-and-see' , but don't forget your -ve keywords.

Never leave it for Google to decide after all theyre not out to make money for you.

Think about it, if you had every keyword your potential visitor was going to type would you need broad match?

Never throw it out to see what happens always be in control, always expand your broadmatch/phrasematch keywords...your ideal goal would be to have everything on exact (though thats a really big ask!).

Good luck!!

The program I have written would allow you to take your current 150 keywords and shuffle them about a bit, producing new exact and phrase matched keyphrases.

Another thing that maybe useful to you is that if you ever want to take your profitable keywords from google to MSN the program will format them for you so you simply have to upload a small CSV file.

I'm currently developing 2 new features:

1) The ability to use dynamic text in MSN
2) The ability to easily set the Destination URL in Google differently from your ad URL - For reasons why you might want to do this read this thread

You can find out more from the URL in my sig.

Cheers
Mark.

Re: Adwords - Phrase, exact or broard ?

My campain has now been running for the whole weekend, i have generated 200 clicks to my merchant site with a 6% ctr whith i guess is ok? but NO CONVERSIONS , i am useing affiliate window and dont know how long any conversions would take to show.

I have spent about £15 so far which isnt too much of a problem because i know the murchant uses 30 day cookies so hopefully..... some of the clicks will generate sales later

I have just been into my adwords account and tweeked all the keywords, any that were showing in position 1 - 2 I reduced the cpc of slightly, any that were getting huge sech volumes and loads of clicks (even when ranked low i.e 6+) i reduced the cpc of slightly. the average performace keywords such as ones rankes 3-4 with a ctr of 3% and above i left alown.

As this is my first PPC campaign im noth sure if this is a good start or if i am doing the right thing any help is appreciated.

thanks

james ball

Usually with affiliate window the sales are reported within minutes.

I have found you need to run a campaign for a couple of weeks to start getting some quality data to study.

I have campaigns which only seems to do well on saturdays (therefore reduce ppc during the week), others only have sales when the kids go to bed etc.

I do find with fashion sites the conversion rate is lower than some sectors as people just browse on dinner breaks.
